Biography

Yoshimasa Furuta, partner and co-chair of the dispute resolution group at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, specialises in international and domestic litigation, commercial arbitration and mediation, and other dispute resolution procedures. Mr Furuta represents Japanese and foreign companies in all kinds of business disputes, both in Japan and abroad, involving sales of goods, distributorship, technology licensing, intellectual property infringement (patents, copyright, trademark, know-how and unfair competition), labour and employment, corporate management, complex financial products, and other business transactions.

Mr Furuta teaches various courses on, among other areas, commercial transactions, civil procedure, international litigation, commercial arbitration and legal ethics, as a professor of law at the University of Tokyo (2013–2016) and Seikei University (2004–2011); a visiting professor at Columbia Law School (Spring 2016) and Sekei University (autumn 2013); and an adjunct lecturer at Rikkyo University (2000–2008), Keio University (2008–2009; 2018–present), Tsukuba University (2008–2009) and the University of Tokyo (2016–present).

He served as a mediator at the Nuclear Damage Compensation Dispute Resolution Centre (2011–present); a secretary at the Legislative Council of the Ministry of Justice (2008–2010); a foreign attorney at the New York firm Whitman Breed Abbott & Morgan (now Winston & Strawn) (1995 to 1996); and a government official at the Japanese Ministry of Home Affairs (now the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) (1988–1989).

Mr Furuta is a graduate of the University of Tokyo (LLB, 1988) and Harvard Law School (LLM, 1995; Addison Brown Prize, 1995), and is admitted to the Bar in Japan (1991) and New York (1996).
