Thomas J. Brewer is an independent arbitrator, based in Seattle, Washington, USA, specializing in international and domestic commercial arbitrations. Previously a trial lawyer representing clients in commercial cases, he has more than thirty years of experience serving as an arbitrator, court-appointed special master, and mediator in commercial cases. Mr. Brewer's arbitration experience includes both domestic and international commercial arbitrations, with over 350 appointments as panel chair, neutral panelist arbitrator or sole arbitrator since becoming a full-time neutral in 2000.
Mr. Brewer is a member of the ICDR's International Roster of arbitrators, the AAA’s Commercial, Energy, Intellectual Property, M&A and Joint Ventures, Construction and Aviation, Aerospace and National Security panels of arbitrators. He is also a member of the CPR Institute's National, Cross-Border, Energy, Oil & Gas, Health Care and Life Sciences and Commercial Real Estate panels of arbitrators. He is also a member of the Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center's Tech List of leading arbitrators in the technology sector.
Mr. Brewer is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). He was selected by Best Lawyers in America as Lawyer of the Year for arbitration in Seattle in 2015, 2017 and again for 2019.
His caseload includes a wide range of experience in business and commercial disputes, principally involving commercial contract disputes, energy, oil & gas and electric power industry disputes, technology and intellectual property cases, and cases involving disputes between investors and business co-owners, LLC members, M&A, joint operating and joint venture agreements and sale of business matters. He also has substantial prior experience in arbitrations involving aviation, satellite, aerospace, railroad and government-related disputes. His arbitration experience also includes numerous construction cases.
Mr. Brewer was a contributing author to THE COLLEGE OF COMMERCIAL ARBITRATORS GUIDE TO BEST PRACTICES IN COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION, 4th ed., Juris Net 2017 (and to the three prior editions), and to THE LEADING PRACTITIONERS' GUIDE TO INTERNATIONAL OIL & GAS ARBITRATIONS, (Juris, Gaitis ed., 2015), among many other publications.
Mr. Brewer is a graduate of Dartmouth College (B.A., Government, magna cum laude, 1968), Oxford University (B.A., Jurisprudence, First Class Honours, Wronker and Jurisprudence Prizes, Rhodes Scholar, 1973) and of the Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude, law review, 1975).
