Thierry Ngoga Gakuba is “a true arbitration specialist” who is known for his exceptional work throughout the continent.
Thierry Ngoga Gakuba (ArbP) is a lawyer specialised in international arbitration, commercial litigation, business advisory, risk and compliance.
He acted as counsel and has been appointed as co-arbitrator, sole arbitrator and chairman in KIAC, ICC and ad hoc arbitration under Rwandan, English, Nigerian and Swiss law with seats in Kigali, London and Paris.
Over the past 16 years he has held senior positions including serving as first registrar for the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC) where he participated in the business development strategy and co-administered the KIAC’s arbitration proceedings (appointing tribunals, advising tribunals and sharing best practice with parties), serving as CEO of the Rwanda Bar Association and as in-house lawyer at the Rwandan Ministry of Justice.
Thierry initiated and successfully managed projects as consultant and project manager in the area of arbitration and access to justice for the Rwanda Bar Association, the Kigali International Arbitration Centre, the African Institute of International Law, the Rwandan Justice Sector (JSLO), and the ABA Rule of Law Initiative among others.
He is a member of the IBA-BIC’s international trade in legal services committee and is a board member of the African Arbitration Association (AfAA). He previously served as board member of Transparency International Rwanda and the Rwanda Society of Authors.
Thierry is a frequent speaker at international arbitration gatherings and conducts arbitration seminars to lawyers in East African countries, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Cambodia.
He speaks Kinyarwanda, French, English and Swahili.
Thierry was identified as a “Future Leader” of arbitration by Who’s Who Legal (2017) and described as “one of the fastest-rising stars of African arbitration”.
