Steven S McNew is a senior managing director based in Houston in FTI Technology’s information governance, privacy and security services (IGP&S) practice. In his role, Mr McNew serves as an expert in disputes, investigations and litigations related to various forms of cryptocurrencies. He also assists clients in the evaluation, assessment, audit and implementation of blockchain solutions, including the creation of cost-effective and defensible strategies for information governance on blockchain-based solutions.
In addition to cryptocurrencies and blockchain, Mr McNew has more than 30 years of experience in information and data security, complex discovery and digital forensics. Mr McNew completed studies in blockchain and cryptocurrency at MIT and has led engagements involving blockchain assessments, pilot projects and software selection and implementation. He has also led numerous investigations involving issues related to blockchain and various forms of cryptocurrency.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr McNew held leadership positions with several legal and technology consulting firms, including Navigant Consulting and Huron Consulting Group. For 31 years, he has applied this expertise by leading thousands of engagements for corporate and law firm clients globally, across numerous industries.
Mr McNew has served as strategic advisor, expert, consultant, engagement manager and project manager to corporations of all sizes and their legal counsel in a multitude of matters. Some representative matters include: serving as strategic advisor and expert in a class action involving asset tracing to identify originating entity of Bitcoin, performing digital asset investigation, asset tracing, assistance with the subpoena of an exchange and reports to assist in the judicial process; serving as strategic advisor and expert in a dispute over the division of Bitcoin assets between separated entities of a joint-venture, performing digital asset investigation, asset tracing, assistance with the subpoena of an exchange and reports to assist in the judicial process; serving as strategic advisor and expert in a dispute about the classification of the use of cryptocurrency for insurance coverage, performing digital asset investigation, asset tracing, submitting expert reports, aiding with the subpoena of multiple exchanges, and providing reports to assist in the judicial process; serving as strategic advisor and lead consultant in the design, creation and implementation of a blockchain solution for an international finance company; and serving as strategic advisor in the creation of a smart contract system for an international oil and gas company, including on-chain execution as well as off-chain execution.
