Steven Weisz has nearly three decades' experience as a leading insolvency lawyer with particular strength in complex cross-border and multinational matters.
Steve is a highly experienced, extensively recognised expert in insolvency law. He is a senior counsel and trusted adviser representing stakeholders in a timely, effective, cost-efficient manner, often on an urgent basis. His practice encompasses all aspects of complex multinational, cross-border, as well as domestic insolvency and distressed matters. His pragmatic approach emphasises strategic practical solutions to complex multidimensional and multidisciplinary issues.
After almost 30 years at one of Canada's leading law firms, Steve joined the corporate and litigation boutique firm Brauti Thorning LLP as a partner to launch and lead their insolvency group. He regularly represents purchasers of distressed debt and assets, debtors, court-appointed officers, and major stakeholders of insolvent businesses.
Steve graduated from the University of Toronto law school and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1991. He is recognised as a leader in insolvency law by many reputable rating agencies including Chambers, Lexpert, ILFR and Who's Who Legal.
Steve is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada (IIC) and chair of the communications committee. He is general editor of the National Creditor Debtor Review and a former executive of the Turnaround Management Association; he regularly speaks at industry conferences and seminars on insolvency law and litigation matters. Steve is also an instructor at Osgoode Hall Law School's intensive trial advocacy programme.
Steve also dedicates his time and efforts to the United Jewish Appeal, Prostate Cancer Canada and the Bay Street Fore a Cause Foundation, a non-profit organisation of Bay Street professionals dedicated to raising funds and supporting underprivileged children in the Greater Toronto Area
