Shawn D’Aguiar is a partner in the firm’s private investment funds group, where his practice focuses on fund structuring and formation, and he advises managers and investors in the private equity, infrastructure and energy, private debt and venture capital sectors.
He covers a wide range of funds and investment arrangements including impact and responsible investing funds; permanent capital vehicles; segregated managed accounts; emerging market funds; shariah-compliant funds; and internal incentive schemes and co-investment arrangements.
In addition to his fund formation work, Shawn also leads on various fund restructurings and recapitalisations; GP-led liquidity events; secondary transactions; and strategic investments in, and transactions, of fund managers.
He is also an integral member of the firm’s impact and responsible investing group, an innovative new practice area that helps investors mindful of environmental, social and governance issues make a positive social and/or environmental impact through their investments without sacrificing returns.
Additionally, Shawn is the only funds and private equity lawyer selected to be a member of the City of London Corporation’s Sustainable Development Capital Initiative, whose aim is to help raise the necessary capital required to help meet the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Shawn was named in the 30 under 40 most influential private equity lawyers in the US, Europe and Asia by Private Funds Management (2015), which stated that he “has his finger on the pulse of the infrastructure market, acting for both managers and investors in private infrastructure funds, including clean and renewable energy and social infrastructure”. The guide added that his “international experience also sets him apart”, adding that he “has expertise advising on emerging market funds including those investing in Africa, India, Brazil, Turkey and South East Asia”. Shawn has also been recommended for investment funds work by The Legal 500 since 2012.
Alongside fee-earning, Shawn heads up the London office’s committee for racial and ethnic diversity (one of the key pillars identifying and implementing opportunities to promote diversity within the firm) as well as the community service arm of the office’s pro-bono, community service and charity committee, which helps staff get more involved and give back to the community. He is also the chair of GlobalGiving UK and a global board member of GlobalGiving Foundation, the first charitable crowdfunding platform which is focused on transforming aid and philanthropy to accelerate community led change.
He joined Goodwin in January 2017, along with seven other partners who formed the bulk of the former S J Berwin's leading private investment funds group.
Shawn is a frequent speaker at industry events and a guest commentator on various industry press platforms.
