Sandy Cowan is a “rising star” in the field with considerable experience in international arbitration as an expert witness. He is particularly strong on cross-border work in the energy sector.
Sandy Cowan is a director in the forensic practice of Grant Thornton UK LLP and leads the international arbitration group.
Sandy has been with Grant Thornton since 2003 and acted on a least 50 separate forensic engagements. He now focuses on complex international dispute resolution and has a breadth of experience in international arbitration, expert witness and shareholder dispute work.
Sandy has a great range of experience in international, complex, commercial disputes. He has worked on assignments across a multitude of jurisdictions including Africa, Europe and the Middle East in a variety of sectors including energy and natural resources, construction and technology and media and telecoms involving claims ranging from £1 million to £500 million. Sandy has been involved in international arbitrations under various rules including ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA and ICSID, being engaged by both claimant and respondent parties.
He also specialises in disputes arising from mergers and acquisitions including completion accounts, earn out disputes, breach of warranty and fraudulent misrepresentation claims, and has been part of the expert determination team on over 20 transactions.
His recent international arbitration work includes alleged breaches of a BIT due to the imposition of certain measures, warranty claims arising from the sale of a manufacturing facilities and alleged breaches of implementation agreements and power purchase agreements.
Sandy is an associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and an accredited counter fraud Specialist.
