Ruby Asturias is a well-established practitioner with sweeping knowledge of complex tax matters, particularly foreign investment.

Biography

Ruby Asturias is principal partner at EY Law. She specialises in M&A, infrastructure and finance, corporate and commercial law. With more than 21 years of experience providing legal advice, she has acquired ample knowledge and solid cultural understanding of the regional climate and how business is done within the Central American region. Her work has an emphasis on multinational investments and infrastructure projects.

In 2002 she co-founded Bufete Centro Americano Aczalaw, a firm with a 55 per cent female equity partnership. In 2012, following a merger, she became the first female equity partner of Pacheco Coto, a leading international firm within the Central American region. 

She has been chair of the NYSBA’s Guatemala chapter for more than eight years and is founding chair for the leading committee of NYSBA Latin American council.

She is also the chair of Transforma Abogadas in Guatemala, an NGO endorsed by the Cyrus R Vance Center for International Justice that, for the past three years, has mentored women entering the profession and helped them advance in their careers.

In 2012 she was recognised as a “leading light” by Latin Lawyer and  the  Vance  Center, while Chambers Global and Chambers Latin America have recommended her as a “leading lawyer” for five consecutive years (2010–2015). In 2015 she won the Chambers Women in Law (Latin America) Award for Outstanding Contribution to Furthering the Advancement of Women in the Law. She has participated as a speaker at various Chambers and Partners Diversity Events in Mexico and Guatemala.

In 2019, at the NYBSA annual meeting, she received the international section’s Championing Ethical Practices Award for her work in developing the Ethics Best Practice Guidelines for Latin America and the Caribbean.

She is an attorney and notary, having qualified at Francisco Marroquín University (cum laude, 1999). She holds master’s degrees in business law (2003), as well as corporate law, finance and taxation (2006), also from Francisco Marroquín University. Ruby also has a master’s degree in law from the Catholic University of Chile (2012) and an executive master’s degree from Georgetown/INCAE University (1999).

She has also studied several courses in financial entrepreneurship at Tulane University, and a management programme at Yale School of Management (2008), among others.
