Richard has over 20 years’ experience in the construction and engineering sectors. He has been based in the UAE since 2008 and has an international practice advising and representing Owners, Developers, Funders, Contractors on their most challenging projects across the real estate, infrastructure, hospitality, power, water and petrochemical industries.
He received his MA in Jurisprudence from Oxford University and worked for Masons (now Pinsent Masons) and Linklaters in London before relocating to Dubai. He joined Berwin Leighton Paisner (now Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner) in Abu Dhabi 2011 and has been Regional Managing Partner of the firm’s Middle East practice since 2014, heading the global Construction Disputes team since 2018.
Richard has acted in many high-value arbitrations under a variety of institutional rules, dealing with a broad range of issues under standard form and bespoke construction and engineering contracts. He often conducts his own advocacy and accepts appointments as an arbitrator.
Richard also acts as project counsel, assisting clients resolve issues during project execution, and has drafted and negotiated contracts on behalf of Owners and Contractors on high value projects around the world.
He often writes for periodicals and blogs on developments in the construction and engineering sectors, opinions on standard form contracts (with particular expertise in the FIDIC forms of contract) and arbitration practice and procedure.
Richard is member of the Law Society of England and Wales, a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Society of Construction Law (Gulf). He has been published in Lexis Nexis, PLC and the AAA/Bahrain Chamber arbitration review.
