René is counsel in Allen & Overy’s Hamburg office. He advises on all aspects of German and EU competition law. He represents clients across all sectors, in particular consumer electronics, media, technology, retail, food, life sciences, real estate and shipping. He has a particular interest in the economics of competition law and regularly publishes articles in competition law journals.
A focus of René’s practice is competition litigation. He represents clients seeking judicial review against the decisions of competition authorities and in private enforcement actions, with particular expertise in follow-on actions brought by customers of cartelised goods, preliminary injunction cases, disputes concerning the legality of anticompetitive restraints in distribution contracts and joint ventures. His extensive experience covers both the pre-trial (negotiation) stage and representation in court.
René regularly advises on internal investigations. He represents clients in investigations conducted by competition authorities as well as in regular antitrust compliance audits. His expertise covers the design, set up and execution of internal investigations, including the use of tools such as e-Discovery software.
René has also extensive experience in merger control matters before the German Federal Cartel Office and the European Commission. This includes complex cases (Phase II investigations) and seeking judicial review against prohibition decisions.
