Biography:

Who's Who Legal Korea - Environment

Mr Tong-Keun Seol is currently serving as a senior partner at Lee & Ko and leads the firm’s highly recognised environment, health and safety law practice group. With over 19 years of diverse and extensive experience in the field of environmental law, Mr Seol is a true expert, and recognised as such among his peers as well as by the relevant government agencies.

Mr Seol’s experience extends both the transactional and litigation aspects of the environment and occupational safety law practice. Highlights of his extensive practice include, but are in no way limited to, climate change, emissions rights trading, CDM and renewable energy projects. Mr Seol has further advised and represented clients in CDM projects as well as disputes involving CER distributions and allocations of emissions rights. Recently, Mr Seol successfully represented the Korean government and the Mine Reclamation Corporation in a US$40 million environmental civil claim against the coal mining right holder.

Mr Seol’s practice also includes pre-acquisition diligence, licence and permit acquisitions; and establishment and implementation of standard operation procedures for clients to ensure compliance with the Act on the Registration and Evaluation of Chemical Substances, the Chemical Control Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and other applicable laws.

In addition to his extensive transaction and litigation experience, and as a testament to his industry recognition, Mr Seol currently serves as a legal adviser and counsel for multiple public and private agencies, including the Ministry of yjr Environment, the Korea New and Renewable Energy Association and the Mine Reclamation Corporation. Mr Seol served as a mediator of the Seoul Environment Dispute Resolution Commission for six years, and is currently a secretary of the special environment conservation committee of the Seoul Bar Association.

Mr Seol is also deeply committed to his active pro bono practice. He serves as a member of the Seoul Metropolitan City sustainable development committee and was recently appointed an executive director of the Seoul Green Trust, a non-profit organisation focusing on forest and park conservation.

With his experience and expertise in this complex area of law, Mr Seol and the Lee & Ko environment, health and safety law practice group not only understand its clients’ needs, but are also capable of capitalising on the collective expertise of Mr Seol and the rest of his team. With these advantages, the group can deliver practical and tailored legal solutions to clients’ environmental problems and disputes.

WWL says: Tong Keun Seol is “among the top names in Korea” for environmental and climate change law, state respondents who admire his “long and practical experience in this area of law”.
