Biography:

Who's Who Legal Nigeria - Labour & Employment

Bimbo Atilola is the managing partner of Hybrid Solicitors, and a thought leader and expert in Nigerian labour and employment law. He has advised and consulted for top-tier Nigerian and multinational companies and organisations in almost all industry sectors in Nigeria, including oil and gas, maritime, aviation, banking and financial services, manufacturing, logistics, hospitality, agriculture, human capital consultants, and trade unions. His advisory and consultancy transactions include the design and review of employment policies, expatriate policies and collective bargaining agreements, providing legal advisory and support on collective bargaining negotiations, collective redundancies, employees separation and compensations, dismissals, human resources audits and due diligence.

Bimbo was the lead legal consultant to a consortium of over 10 major multinational shipping/maritime companies in Nigeria on the structuring of an industry-based collective bargaining agreement. He was part of the legal team that advised and acted for a major airline in the structuring of a redundancy deal following the takeover of the company. He has consulted for the Nigeria LNG and Total Nigeria Plc on capacity building on labour laws and industrial relations management for their trade unions (PENGASSAN & NUPENG). Bimbo is currently advising a group of employers in a critical Nigerian energy industry sub-sector on some very complex collective labour relations matters. He regularly advises foreign companies and potential investors on the Nigerian labour and employment law and industrial relations regime.

A courtroom advocate, Bimbo regularly appears as counsel before all the superior courts in Nigeria, especially the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN). Some of his current major contentious work include representing a public quoted multinational company at the NICN (Lagos division), and another major multinational company, both on very complex trade disputes and industrial relations friction.

He consults for some of the biggest Nigerian human capital consultancy companies, and represented one at the public hearing of the House of Representatives committee on labour.

A prolific author, Bimbo is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Labour Law Review, a widely read international journal in Nigeria. He has authored and edited several leading and frequently cited works on Nigerian labour and employment law, including Annotated Nigerian Labour Legislation (2008), Themes in Trade Union Law and Administration in Nigeria (2010), Themes on the New Employee’s Compensation Act (2013), Nigerian Labour Law Dictionary (2015), Managing Expatriates in Employment: Legal, HR & Tax Perspectives (2016), and Recent Developments in Nigerian Labour & Employment Law (2017).

The work Themes on the New Employee’s Compensation Act has been cited with approval a few times by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.

He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.  He authored the Study Pack on Nigerian Labour Law published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management Nigeria some years ago, which is commonly used by HR professionals seeking professional certification of the Institute.

Bimbo obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law from the Lagos State University and the University of Lagos respectively, and he is an alumnus of Lagos Business School.

WWL says: Bimbo Atilola is “well known in the market for labour and employment issues” with one source stating, “In my opinion he is one of the best employment lawyers in the country."
