Tolu commenced his legal career in commercial litigation with a law firm in 2006 after his call to the Bar. He has a postgraduate degree in oil and gas law from the University of Aberdeen (2010; John Taylor scholar); a bachelor’s degree in law from the Nigerian Law School (2006); and an LLB from the University of Ibadan (2005).
Tolu has held many voluntary positions including, among others, the co-chair of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry Arbitration Committee (LASIAC); vice-chairman, training committee, section on business law, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA); a mentor for the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme; a national election observer for Nigeria’s Independent Electoral Commission (INEC); president of his LLM class at the University of Aberdeen; and secretary of the student representative council at the Nigerian Law School.
After qualification, Tolu began working in maritime law and general commercial litigation. In 2006 he joined Perchstone & Graeys as a pupil counsel. After working across various groups within the firm he settled in the commercial litigation practice, working with Mr Eghobamien SAN and other brilliant minds on matters including high-profile oil & gas arbitrations. In 2014 Tolu was admitted to the firm’s board of partners, and became responsible for developing the firm’s energy practice as well as its Indian portfolio.
Tolu has been involved in high-profile domestic and international energy transactions and litigation, as well as energy and commercial arbitrations. A well-rounded lawyer with a deep insight into the workings of the local and international energy industry, Tolu has also garnered substantial experience and expertise in advising clients on commercial complex headlines transactions and disputes, spanning litigation and arbitration, relating to the power, and oil and gas sectors.
