Who's Who Legal Thought Leaders Global Elite

Jorge Fantuzzi has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics (with a focus on industrial organisation) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, as well as a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago. Former roles include adviser for the Secretary of Social Development of Chile, and economic analyst in the Chilean Court of Competition. He has taught at many universities in Chile, on economics courses related to industrial organisation.

Describe the current focus of your work.

My focus is the economic assessment of damages for arbitration and antitrust cases. We use statistical and econometric techniques to estimate the causal effect of certain actions and the effect for the affected parties.

What attracted you to a career as a quantum expert?

I first started my work as an economic analyst at the Competition Court here in Chile. There I realised how intellectually challenging it was to asses the damage that a certain competition practice could inflict to the market, and how econometrics can help in this matter.

What do clients look for in an effective quantum expert?

Commitment to excellence: this results in an economic report that gives value to the legal adviser and to the clients. Good communication skills. And our reports must meet the standard of proof for arbitration and other trials.

What developments are you seeing in South American arbitration at the moment?

I see that the South American market is integrating more every year. Last year we had cases in Peru and Colombia, and we are expecting more this year. The same rigour that we offer in Chile is useful for cases in other countries.

What makes FK Economics stand out from competitors in the market?

FK Economics combines academic rigour with fieldwork, which allows us to access concrete and verifiable information, and to strengthen the economic evidence presented in the cases.

How do you see your practice developing over the next five years?

There are big advances regarding data analytics. Specifically, knowing how to manage big data is getting more and more important every day. Because of this, FK Economics has data analytics and machine-learning experts to complement our economic analysis skills.

What advice would you give to a younger practitioner starting out in this field?

Hard work and honesty are fundamental values if you want to succeed in this industry.
