Who's Who Legal Competition: Future Leaders - Partners

Charles is recognised as a leading competition lawyer by Best Lawyers, Who’s Who Legal and The Legal 500. He is described as having “phenomenal client service ethics” and “the ability to see the commercial drivers very quickly and clearly apply them to the law”.

Charles won Global Competition Review’s 2014 Merger Control Matter of the Year – Asia-Pacific, Middle East & Africa for Virgin Australia’s acquisition of Tiger Airways. Charles was a finalist for the same award in 2016, following his work for television station Ten Network Holdings Limited in relation to its strategic arrangements with monopoly subscription TV provider Foxtel.

Charles stands apart from other practitioners because of his deep expertise across three major areas of competition practice: restrictive trade practices, including merger clearances – as noted above Charles led the Virgin Australia and Ten Network deals recognised by the GCR and in the past year, Charles acted for Australia’s largest telecommunications provider, Telstra, in the restructure of it and News Corporations’ ownership of Foxtel and Fox Sports. Charles also acted for an interested party in its successful opposition to BP’s proposed $1.8 billion acquisition of over 500 Woolworth petrol stations; misuse of market power and cartels – Charles is currently advising a client in relation to an international misuse of market power investigation commenced by the ACCC. During the course of this investigation a cartel arrangement was uncovered and Charles is now seeking immunity for that client; Australian consumer law – Charles is currently acting for Virgin Australia in its response to the ACCC’s report on airline non-compliance with the law. He is also acting for a major Australian retailer on a confidential investigation into excessive surcharging and access to infrastructure – for over 15 years Charles has acted for and against those seeking access to essential infrastructure in Australia. Charles’ work spans various industries including aviation, where he has truly unique experience having acted across his career for both of Australia’s major airlines, as well as Australia’s largest airport, energy and resources and grain.

Charles has extensive experience advising clients in a broad range of industries on competition law matters and he already has over 10 years’ experience in advising clients on digital economy issues. He is now sought after by various clients, including Ola Cabs – India’s largest ride-sharing platform and key competitor to Uber. Charles is acting for Ola on all aspects of its Australian expansion.

Charles has presented at major conferences including the GCR Live Singapore 7th Annual Asia-Pacific Law Leaders Forum, the inaugural Consumer Law Conference, the Australian Financial Review National Innovation Summit, the Australian Competition Policy Summit and the General Counsel Summit.

Charles’ standing with clients is reflected in the fact that he is the Gilbert + Tobin client relationship partner for key clients such as Virgin Australia, Audi, Smeg, eBay, PayPal, ResMed and Brookfield Property Partners.

Charles is also the co-author of the Australia and New Zealand chapter of the American Bar Association’s International.

WWL says: The "excellent" Charles Coorey is "an incredibly dedicated lawyer" who is appreciated for his "practical advice that is easy for commercial managers to digest".
