Michael Laskey is an associate in Stikeman Elliott’s competition and foreign investment group. He regularly advises clients in connection with the review of transactions under the Competition Act and Investment Canada Act. Mike has significant experience advising in connection with complex transactions under the Competition Act, high-profile transactions under the economic and cultural provisions of the Investment Canada Act, and national security matters. Mike also advises clients on compliance issues related to the Competition Act. Mike is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

In relation to competition law matters, Mike has advised in connection with many complex and high-profile transactions. Recent notable transactions include: IBM in its acquisition of Red Hat; United Technologies Corporation in its acquisition of Rockwell Collins; Wabtec in its acquisition of GE’s transportation business; Jean-Coutu in its acquisition by Metro; Lowe’s in its acquisition of RONA; Univar in its acquisition of Nexeo; Valspar in its acquisition by the Sherwin-Williams Company; CST Brands in its acquisition by Alimentation Couche-Tard; the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board in its acquisition of Constellation Brands Canada; Rogers Communications in its acquisition of network spectrum from Shaw Communications; Sobeys in its acquisition of Safeway’s Canadian business; Dr Oetker Canada in its acquisition of the North American pizza business of McCain Foods and many others.

In relation to foreign investment matters, Mike has advised in connection with many of the most significant foreign acquisitions of Canadian businesses, including Airbus in its acquisition of a majority interest in C Series Aircraft Limited Partnership; Vail Resorts in its acquisition of Whistler Blackcomb Holdings; and others, including several reviews under the national security provisions of the Investment Canada Act.
