Who's Who Legal Competition

Gustavo Madi is a director in competition economics with a master’s degree in economic theory from Unicamp (2004). He has more than 15 years of experience in competition studies, trade defence, tax, market intelligence and demand forecasting. He was lecturer in the continuing education programme at GVLaw (FGV), and coordinator of the microeconomics applied to antitrust law programme at the Institute for Competition, Consumer and International Trade Studies (IBRAC) and Mackenzie Presbyterian University.

At LCA, Gustavo Madi has provided technical opinions for antitrust investigations of M&A deals and business strategies in several sectors (carbonated drinks, orange juice, iron ore, industrial gas, food, steel, pulp and paper, bank, autoparts, etc); and market intelligence and demand forecasting for several sectors (beverages, food, appliances, personal care, etc). Among the most recent high-profile Brazilian merger cases, Gustavo Madi was on the team advising parties towards a settlement in Nestlé/Garoto (food industry); Camargo Corrêa/Cimpor (cement); BrasilFoods BRF (processed foods); DASA/MD1 (labs); Iochpe/Maxxion (autoparts sector); Kroton/Anhanguera (education sector) (named Merger Control Matter of the Year: Americas at GCR’s 5th Annual Awards in 2015); Bradesco/HSBC and Itau/Citibank (bank sector).

Gustavo’s publications include: “Methods of measuring the compensation of private actions in cases of cartel” in Revista do IBRAC (vol 20, ano 18, 2011); “The decision to invest in liquid fuel distribution bases" in Mendonça, E et al, The interface between regulation and competition in the oil production chain: CADE judgments (São Paulo: Migalhas, 2017).
