Biography:

Who's Who Legal Corporate Immigration: Lawyers

Gary brings with him an international perspective on South African immigration and citizenship law. Educated in the United States, Gary is a federal lawyer admitted in Washington DC. Gary's profession began with international trade regulation and multinational legal compliance. He is well published in his field, especially within the transformative context of South Africa's liberation in 1994, and remains to date the recognised intellectual leader in his field, continually publishing expert insights into various aspects of immigration and citizenship law within the wider policy and political environment. His background has enabled Gary to approach localised problems from a sophisticated range of angles, taking political and socio-economic considerations into account.

Gary was admitted as an attorney of the Cape High Court in 1996. Since then he has practised exclusively in the field of South Africa's immigration and citizenship law. He has established an outstanding reputation for his creative and steadfast approach to complex immigration problems, gaining recognition for his protracted litigation in the public interest on the democratisation of South Africa's immigration regulation making process. Through his work, South Africa's first minister of home affairs, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, invited Gary to advise on his final Cabinet draft of the Immigration Act in 2003. This formed the foundation of South Africa's current immigration system.

Gary’s understanding of the commercial South African environment also enables him to deal with corporate immigration strategically and effectively. Over the decades Gary has represented some of the most important corporations operating in South Africa. Gary’s pragmatic approach has ensured his demand by Human Resource and Corporate Managers.

Gary belongs to South Africa's Litvak Jewish community, and his family are originally from Lithuania. In the course of his involvement in South Africa's Jewish communal affairs he developed an interest in the restoration of citizenship laws of Lithuania, and established a unit within his practice assisting globally Jewish descendants of Lithuanian citizens to have their rights to Lithuanian (and European Union) citizenship restored.

WWL says: Gary Eisenberg is a standout figure in the South African market where he is renowned for his leading expertise in immigration and citizenship law.
