In February 2008, Allan joined Cliffe Dekker (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) as a director.

His experience includes: advising BHP Billiton on the disposal by bidding process of certain of its non-core coal rights; representing Hitachi in negotiations with a Canadian mining company and a consortium of nine international financiers; acting in a private equity deal takeover and restructuring of a major Canadian food company; representing numerous major clients in the structuring of mining and mineral transactions, and mining law-based litigation; advising a major French industrial group on its South African structures, mineral interests and BEE alliances; advising major clients on compliance and mineral issues in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Niger, Mozambique, Chad and the DRC; and representing major French mining group Eramet on its acquisition of manganese and smelter interests in South Africa.
