Who's Who Legal Corporate: Merger & Acquisition

Arend von Riegen is a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and is based in Frankfurt. His practice is focused on cross-border mergers and acquisitions (in particular public takeovers) and private equity. Arend has also advised many international investors on their investments in Germany and beyond.

Over the past 15 years, Arend has advised on more than 50 completed M&A transactions with an aggregate value in excess of €100 billion. These include a large number of high-profile and, in some cases, award-winning transactions for clients across a wide range of industries and in many countries.

His work has included acting for Midea on its €4.5 billion public takeover of KUKA, a listed German robotics manufacturer; London Stock Exchange Group on its proposed £21 billion merger with Deutsche Börse; Celesio on its business combination with McKesson; Multi-Colour Corporation on the acquisition of the Labels Division of Constantia Flexibles; Federal Republic of Germany on its public takeover and take private of Hypo Real Estate; ING Direct NV on the acquisition of Interhyp; AWD in relation to the public takeover offer by Swiss Life; Hanson in relation to the public takeover offer from HeidelbergCement and UniCredit on its €15 billion business combination with HypoVereinsbank.

Arend’s work for private equity clients included acting for Blackstone on its acquisition of Schenck Process; FountainVest on its acquisition of Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems; One Equity Partners on its sale of Austrian Constantia Flexibles Group to French investment group Wendel; TPG on its acquisition of Transporeon; One Equity Partners on its takeover of Austrian listed Constantia Packaging AG and on its takeover of Dutch listed SMARTRAC; Permira on exit of its investment in Hugo Boss by way of various block trade transactions; Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and PAI Partners on the acquisition of Xella-Group from Haniel; Permira on its public takeovers of Valentino and Hugo Boss and Permira and KKR on their public takeover of ProSieben.

In various directories Arend is singled out as one of the leading M&A lawyers in Germany.
