Professor Luiz Olavo Baptista has worked as an attorney in litigations and arbitrations for over 50 years. Some of the finest litigators in Brazil were forged under his leadership in his former law firm founded in 1938.

Since 2015, with the creation of Atelier Jurídico and Nakagawa Baptista & Baptista, Professor Luiz Olavo has broadened his approach towards legal practice. Through articles, books, seminars and reports, he sharpens the technical and academic skills of his multidisciplinary team. In litigations and arbitrations, Professor Luiz Olavo has crafted defence and attack strategies in some of the largest international commercial and investment arbitration cases in recent years.

His client-oriented approach, the full availability of his executive team led by partner Adriane Nakagawa Baptista, and a solid network of collaborators have opened a new chapter in his practice as strategist in complex litigation. A senior statesman in arbitration, Professor Luiz Olavo is frequently featured as speaker in arbitration seminars in Brazil and abroad.

Luiz Olavo Baptista acts as lawyer, consultant and arbitrator, both in Brazil and abroad. He renders legal opinions and draws strategies on complex matters related to contract law, corporate law in general, arbitration and international law. 

He serves as arbitrator in disputes administered by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Arbitration and Mediation Centre of the Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce (CAM-CCBC), the Chamber of Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CIESP/FIESP), the Market Arbitration Chamber (CAM) and the Corporate Arbitration Chamber-Brazil (CAMARB). He is also a member of the French Arbitration Association (AFA)and of the ICC’sInstituteofWorldBusinessLaw.

Professor Baptista is Doctor Honoris Causa of the Lisbon University. Professor Emeritus of Ribeirão Preto Law School University of São Paulo Law School (USP). 

He received the Anchieta Medal from the São Paulo’s Councilmen, the Barão de Ramalho Award from the São Paulo Lawyers’ Institute, and a high-distinction degree from the Superior Military Court. He is grand officer within the Order of Rio Branco. He was awarded the Maria Teresa Cristina de Bourbon Chair by USP (2018). In 2018, the Tribunal Permanente de Revisão of Mercosur awarded Professor Baptista the Rosalba Medal for his lifetime achievements and efforts in the area of dispute resolution.

Mr Baptista communicates fluently in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.

As of May 2015, he is the CEO of Atelier Jurídico and Nakagawa Baptista & Baptista, organising seminars and releasing publications in the area of arbitration and international law.
