John Randall studied law at Cambridge, commenced practice in 1980 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1995. He is also a barrister of New South Wales and of Western Australia. He was deputy head and then head of his chambers for six years. Through over 20 years in silk he has maintained a broad-based practice in chancery and commercial law, with particular experience in company and partnership work, property law and professional negligence matters, and has appeared in a substantial number of reported cases.

He regularly advises several leading national house-builders and developers, and has been involved in numerous cases concerning options, conditional contracts and development agreements. He has also advised on and appeared in many shareholders’ disputes, as well as partnership disputes, principally within firms of solicitors and accountants. He has received two Barrister of the Year awards.

John Randall was a deputy High Court judge from 2000 to 2016, and a recorder from 1996 to 2016. He is an adjunct professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, where he teaches advanced contract, legal history and advocacy, and has taught on the Law Masters programme at the University of Melbourne, as a senior fellow. He is a bencher of Lincoln’s Inn.

His publications include The Tort of Conversion, a finalist in the triennial Inner Temple Book Prize, 2011 (co-authored with Professor Sarah Green); chapters in several edited collections; and articles in leading journals including the Cambridge Law Journal, the Journal of Equity and the Modern Law Review. He has provided expert evidence of English law for courts in Ireland and Spain.
