DESCRIBE YOUR CAREER TO DATE.

In 2010, I was offered the chance to join Bär & Karrer as a tax partner with the aim of further developing the existing tax practice. This was a great opportunity to make a difference and bring in the experience I gained as a tax and private client associate. Taking on more responsibilities over the past few years, I now dedicate a significant part of my time and effort to being co-head of the tax practice and managing partner of the firm.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE PRIVATE CLIENT FIELD?

My business is about law and people. Combining tax and private clients is the perfect match of what I love to do and what motivates me. The private client field can sometimes be challenging, but also very rewarding. It is the combination of the professional advice and the personal element that makes this field so interesting and motivating to work in.

HOW HAS THE ROLE OF PRIVATE CLIENT PRACTITIONERS EVOLVED OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR CAREER?

The role of private client practitioners as the trusted adviser tasked with finding the best solution for each client has remained the same. What has changed is the environment. Topics have become, however, more interdisciplinary. The legal, regulatory and political landscape is more competitive and subject to ongoing changes.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES CURRENTLY FACING PRIVATE CLIENT PRACTITIONERS IN SWITZERLAND?

Since approximately 2010 the number of new laws, guidelines and in particular international initiatives in the area of tax and private clients has increased dramatically. In particular in the area of taxation, international organisations and countries are more actively competing against each other. To find a sustainable, long-term solution for clients in a continuously changing environment has become one of the biggest challenges these days.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST INTERESTING MATTER YOU HAVE WORKED ON RECENTLY?

Tough question –  it is difficult to choose just one! Most likely the acquisition and implementation of a safari game lodge business in South Africa for one of my Swiss-resident clients. Solving legal, cultural, financial, business and tax-related challenges at the same time is what makes our profession as a private client practitioner so interesting and rewarding.

HOW HAS THE MOVE TOWARDS AUTOMATIC INFORMATION EXCHANGE IMPACTED YOUR PRACTICE?

Automatic information exchange is one of the developments in the area of taxation that has had the most significant impact on our practice. It is not about the exchange of tax-relevant data itself, but about privacy and personal integrity. It has become reality that sensitive personal and financial data is shared across the globe between 100 jurisdictions under more than 3,000 bilateral relationships. This was also a driver to engage other initiatives such as public registers for beneficial ownership and shareholders. This fact needs to be considered when advising international clients.

WHAT ARE THE KEY QUALITIES NEEDED FOR A PRIVATE CLIENT LAWYER TO SUCCESSFULLY BUILD LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR CLIENTS?

Dedication to the client and the profession is key to a successful long-term relationship. Every client is unique, irrespective of what the matter is about. Make your client feel this!

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR PRACTICE DEVELOPING OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?

On the one hand, we will need more highly specialised lawyers covering specific tax and legal areas. This is of utmost importance to delivering outstanding technical advice. On the other hand, the relationship with the client and the efficient coordination of the various players involved is key. This includes managing relations to other stakeholders such as administrative bodies, organisations and competitors. Bringing these trends together will be driving the development of my practice over the next few years.
