Antonio Martinez is the head of the competition and European law department at Allen & Overy Spain. He has over 24 years’ experience and is considered by leading directories as among the top competition law practitioners in Spain, and regularly quoted. Chambers Europe (Spain, 2018) quotes a source who states: “Antonio is precise in his advice, understands my business well and is very experienced.” Interviewees further praise his ability to "explain complex cases and the different options we have in terms of their advantages or disadvantages."

Antonio has broad experience in advising international and domestic clients on all aspects of competition law. He focuses in particular on infringement and merger control proceedings both before the European Commission (EC) and the Spanish Competition Authority (CNMC). Antonio has recently been involved in the defence of Altadis (a subsidiary of Imperial Brands Group) and Hanson Hispania (a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement) in infringement proceedings opened by the CNMC. Other recent matters include advising Cepsa on its filing to the EC in relation to its acquisition of CGC (M 8699) and Enagás and Axión on their creation of a full function joint venture (M 8793). He has also represented Evonik (case C/0794/16), Cepsa (case C/0835/17) and Mallinckrodt (case C/0803/16) in merger control filings to the CNMC.

Antonio has also represented Gamesa in relation to the competition law aspects of its integration planning with Siemens Wind Power. He is currently advising collecting societies AGEDI/AIE in their appeal against a CNMC fining decision for an alleged abuse of dominance.

He also has significant experience setting up competition law compliance programmes for Spanish and international corporations.

Companies Antonio has advised over the past year include AGEDI/AIE, Altadis (Imperial Brands Group), AMP, Azucarera (ABF), Beam Suntory, Berkshire Hathaway, Boehringer Ingelheim, CEPSA, EQT, Evonik, Gamesa, Globalvia, Google, GSK España, Hanson Hispania, Hispasat, Huntsmann, Iberdrola, Janssen Cilag (J&J), JP Morgan, Lubrizol, Macquarie, Mallinckrodt, Novartis, OPTrust, Randstad, RTVE, Saria and Yildirim Group.

Antonio is the vice secretary general of the Spanish Association for the Study of European Law and a member of the board of directors of the Spanish Association for the Defence of Competition. He was a professor on the European Law master's degree course at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Antonio is the author of numerous legal publications and co-author of the Comentario a la Ley15/2007, de 3 de julio, de Defensa de la Competencia, a reference book on competition law to which he contributed the chapter on infringement proceedings.

Antonio received a law degree from the Autonomous University of Madrid and holds a master's degree in European law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He is fluent in Spanish, English and French.
