The practice of Professor Alexander von Mühlendahl, Dr iur, JD, LLM (Northwestern) covers advice and litigation in German, European and international trademark law, design law and unfair competition law.

In November 2005 Alexander von Mühlendahl joined the Bardehle Pagenberg firm, bringing with him more than four decades of professional experience gained in leading positions in German and European trademark legislation, practice and academia. For 11 years (1994-2005) he was vice-president of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs) in Alicante, Spain (now the European Union Intellectual Property Office); from 1985 until 1994, he was the head of the division for trademark and unfair competition law at the German Ministry of Justice. Among the legislation for which he was responsible were amendments to the German Unfair Competition Act, the IP legislation following the unification of Germany in 1990 and the new German Trademark Act of 1994. Throughout this period he represented the German government in the negotiations in Brussels on the European trademark law, as well as in WIPO matters. From 1966 to 1979 he was in academic research at the Munich Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law (now the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition).

Alexander von Mühlendahl advises and represents small, medium-sized and large producers of trademarked goods from various European countries in proceedings before the General Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union. He also acts in matters of plant variety protection before these courts.

Professor Alexander von Mühlendahl teaches at the University of Strasbourg (CEIPI), at the University of Alicante (Magister Lucentinus), the University of Hagen, and Queen Mary, University of London, Centre for Commercial Law Studies, where he is a visiting professor. He is co-author of Die Gemeinschaftsmarke (“The Community Trademark”) and co-author of Trade Mark Law in Europe, third edition. He has published many articles in German, English, French and Spanish on topics of his practice.

He is honorary member of the European Communities Trademark Association (ECTA); the Hungarian Trademark Association; and the Association of Trade Mark and Design Law Practitioners (APRAM). He is a member of the German Association of Intellectual Property and Copyright Law (GRUR); INTA; and AIPPI, where he is also co-chair of the trademark committee.

Alexander von Mühlendahl was named one of the most highly regarded trademark lawyers in Germany by WWL: Trademarks, which states in its 2016 edition: “The ‘outstanding’ Alexander von Mühlendahl is revered for his status in the German and European trademark landscape with peers highlighting his ‘unsurpassed knowledge and experience’. The 2017 edition states: “Alexander von Mühlendahl holds a prestigious reputation in the market. His practice covers both advice and litigation, representing both growth companies and multinationals. Clients are impressed by his ‘high level of commercial sensitivity’ and ‘outstanding knowledge’. WWL: Germany (2018) notes, “Alexander von Mühlendahl is an exceptionally knowledgeable practitioner and has an excellent reputation as a skilful adviser and litigator under both German and European law. One peer states: ‘He is probably the best in Germany.’” He is also recommended in WTR1000 (2016–2018).
