Who's Who Legal Mediation

Stephen is married to Fiona, an artist, and lives in South West London. They have four children.

He has been in practice at Brick Court Chambers since 1978. For the past 16 years he has worked full-time as a commercial mediator. He has mediated over 1,300 business, legal and governmental disputes of every legal type including many of the largest and most sensitive in the UK and in the world, with sums in dispute ranging from a few thousand pounds to hundreds of millions and, in some cases, billions. He practises mainly in London but mediates regularly in other parts of the British Isles and in many jurisdictions abroad.

Stephen has consistently featured in The Legal 500 and Chambers as one of the top-ranked commercial mediators practising in the UK. For three years he was listed as one of the top 10 commercial mediators in the world by Who’s Who Legal.  This year he was listed by Who’s Who Legal as one of seven UK, and as one of 15 Worldwide, “Thought Leaders” in Mediation. He has recently been appointed to The Legal 500's “hall of fame” as a mediator recognised over many years as displaying the highest excellence.

For many years Stephen has also been heavily involved with community mediation. He is chair of the trustees of Wandsworth Mediation Service (WMS), a registered charity that he set up in 2004 to provide community mediation services in Wandsworth, to train local people as mediators and to develop initiatives to promote peace in the community. He is currently working on a pilot project to develop a national Community Peace Service comprising a network of local peace centres.

In the past eight years Stephen has mediated and facilitated an increasing number of disputes within the church and between faith groups. He was on the planning committee for the 2013 Faith in Conflict conference at Coventry Cathedral. For the past three years he has been part of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s facilitation team for the regional Shared Conversations on human sexuality.

He contributed a chapter entitled “Mediation and the Church’s Mission” to Good Disagreement? published by Lion Hudson in 2015.

WWL says:  The “always excellent” Stephen Ruttle QC has nearly 20 years of experience as a mediator on an array of matters across the public and private sectors.
