Roland Mathys heads Schellenberg Wittmer's information and communication technology (ICT) group. He often advises clients in outsourcing transactions and major technology projects. Roland also advises in all matters related to software development, technology IP protection and licensing, and emerging technologies (eg, blockchain, IoT and AI). Data protection (both under Swiss law and in relation to the EU GDPR), technology-related compliance issues and ICT dispute resolution are additional areas of strength in his practice.
Recent examples of Roland's expertise in TMT include: advising Schindler in a large compliance project related to the outsourcing of Schindler's IT infrastructure to an external service provider; advising Manor Group and Maus Frères Group in all matters related to ICT and data protection; and providing counsel to Bayer, one of the world's largest life sciences companies, for matters related to data privacy in the health and medtech sector, both under the GDPR and Swiss law.

Roland is director of the International Technology Law Association and vice chair of its technology sourcing committee; officer of the International Bar Association’s technology committee; and co-chair of Swiss ICT’s law committee. Other memberships include the Swiss Forum for Communication Law, the International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Information Security Society Switzerland and the German Association of Law and Informatics. Roland is a panellist to the arbitration and mediation centre of the World Intellectual Property Organization and is panelled as a mediator and arbitrator by the Foundation for Experts in ICT conflict management.
