Helen H Shi is a partner in Fangda Partners (Beijing). Her practice covers all aspects of China-related dispute resolution, ranging from domestic litigation to international arbitration, and is particularly acclaimed for her expertise in dealing with China-related disputes.

Helen Shi has a proven track record for acting as counsel in complex and high-profile commercial arbitration cases. She has dealt with over 100 cases concerning disputes arising from joint venture contracts, equity acquisition, international trade, technology transfer, loan and guarantee transactions, as well as construction disputes. She has successfully represented many international financial institutions, multinational companies and large Chinese corporations before various arbitrations institutions, such as CIETAC, ICC, SIAC and HKIAC.

In addition to her role as counsel, Helen has heard nearly 50 cases (including CIETAC and ICC cases) as arbitrator. She also provided Chinese commercial law opinions and testified as expert in a number of China-related litigation or arbitration cases abroad, including arbitration before HKIAC and an ad hoc tribunal in London, and court proceedings in Hong Kong and Canada. Helen is a court member of ICC for China (2016–) and a member of HKIAC’s proceeding committee.

She is widely published on China-related dispute resolution topics and speaks at international conferences and seminars.

Before joining Fangda in 2005, Helen began her legal career with CIETAC as legal counsel, administering many foreign-related cases. She then studied law in the USA before spending six years at a leading US law firm handling China-related disputes.

Helen Shi is qualified in both PRC and New York. She is a native Mandarin speaker and is fluent in English.

WWL says: Helen Shi is “very well regarded” in the Chinese market by sources who note she is “very active in the shaping of Chinese arbitration law and legislation”.
