Biography:

Who's Who Legal Arbitration: Lawyers

Admitted to the Bar in 1985, Paul Lefebvre is one of 20 lawyers of the Belgian Supreme Court and one of the four founding partners of the law firm Hanotiau & van den Berg, which was set up in 2001 and is widely recognised as leader in the field of commercial arbitration and litigation. Hanotiau & van den Berg won the Belgian Legal Award in 2006 and 2007, in the field of ADR and arbitration. Furthermore, Hanotiau & van den Berg is the only law firm from the Benelux to have been included in the GAR 30, Global Arbitration Review’s list of the 30 best arbitration practices worldwide, which was published in December 2008.

Paul Lefebvre acted as chairman and arbitrator in several Cepina arbitrations and ad hoc arbitrations.  

Paul Lefebvre was assisting professor to Professor Eddy Wymeersch. Currently, he is a professor of international commercial law and dispute resolution at the ICHEC Brussels Management School.

His has written about the public policy factor in arbitration in B-Arbitra (2014); the motivation of arbitral awards in Proces & Bewijs (2015); and control of the arbitral award by the state judges in the light of public policy in JT Luxembourgeois (2016). Together with Me C Lahaye, he published the article “EU Data Protection and the Conflicts of Laws: The Usual “Bag of Tricks or a Fight against the Evasion of Law” in IADC Defense Counsel Journal (2017, volume 84, no. 3). With Me D De Meulemeester, he an article entitled “The New York Convention : An Autopsy of Its structure and Modus Operandi” published in the Journal of International Arbitration (edited by Maxi Scherer, 2018, volume 35, issue 4, pp. 413-438).

He is a member of the IADC. He was nominated president of the international committee from July 2016 until July 2018. He is a regular speaker at IADC conferences at the regional and annual meetings as well as at the AIA and ABAS.

Paul Lefebvre is fluent in English, French and Dutch.
