Who's Who Legal Australia - Corporate Immigration

Alex is co-managing partner of Fragomen’s Australia and New Zealand practice, within the firm’s extensive Asia Pacific operations.

Alex is a dual-qualified solicitor of England and Wales, and Australia, and has practised exclusively in the area of immigration law since 1995. During this time, she has provided legal advice and strategic guidance to some of the world’s largest global companies, in addition to numerous start-ups and small to medium-sized enterprises.

Alex advises companies across a wide range of industries, including financial services, information technology and telecommunications, resources (including oil and gas), as well as professional services organisations, FMCG, business consulting, and engineering/construction businesses.

Alex is acknowledged as a leading immigration lawyer, with particular experience in developing and implementing regional and global immigration programmes, helping companies navigate immigration requirements across the Asia Pacific region (including key markets such as China, Malaysia and Indonesia) and advising on regional compliance risk, immigration audits and enforcement action scenarios.

In Australia, Alex helps companies access the global talent they need to support their business establishment and growth by advising on the most appropriate immigration pathways, ensuring full compliance with immigration law and policy, and supporting the employees and their families with all immigration-related requirements. During the recent period of sweeping changes in Australia, Alex has been advising numerous businesses on the impacts, delivering board briefings and engaging with business leaders to formulate strategy for future workforce planning and critical skills mobility.

Alex is a national trustee of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) and contributes to events and trustee briefings on migration-related issues. She chaired the launch event in Sydney for CEDA’s highly regarded research report, Migration: The Economic Debate, as well as speaking at the Perth launch event. Recently, she hosted a trustee briefing, “Opportunities and Challenges in Northern Australia”.

Alex is an active speaker, panel contributor and chair at many mobility, legal and HR forums in Australia and internationally. She is also a regular presenter at CPD/CLE sessions, including for Legalwise. Alex has contributed articles to publications, including The In-House Lawyer magazine. Prior to her move to the APAC region, Alex was managing partner of Fragomen’s London office.

Alex is a member of the Law Society of New South Wales, the Migration Institute of Australia, the International Bar Association, the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Alex was listed in UK Legal Experts when practising in the UK, as well as The Legal 500 and Chambers UK. She has been listed in Who’s Who Legal for many years.

Alex is admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales and as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. She was educated at the College of Law, Guildford (Law Society finals, honours; CPE in law) and the University of Kent at Canterbury (BA, honours).

WWL says: Alex Paterson is widely respected for her expertise in the immigration space and is frequently engaged by high-profile companies to assist in all aspects of related processes.
