Peter Kather gains widespread praise among peers for being "one of the best" in the field, and an "outstanding patent litigator".
Dr Peter Kather was born in 1954 in Hannover, Germany. He studied law at the University of Augsburg Law School and started his career in Munich in 1983 after being admitted to the bar.
He spent 15 years gaining experience as an IP litigator in Munich before establishing an office in Düsseldorf for his previous firm, which he led until December 2015.
In 2016 Dr Peter Kather and his partners established the high-quality IP litigation boutique Kather Augenstein Rechtsanwälte, with Kather as co-founder and senior partner.
With more than 30 years of experience in IP law, Dr Peter Kather has handled hundreds of IP-infringement cases – with a focus on patent infringement – in the first (regional courts) and second (higher regional courts) instance, and has participated in third instance cases (Federal Court of Justice). He has participated in nullity cases before the German Patent and Trademark Office, the EPO, the Federal Patent Court and the Federal Court of Justice.
His clients benefit from his areas of expertise: engineering, telecommunications, chemistry, automotive and biotechnology. One of his specialties is cross-border proceedings. He has conducted numerous proceedings of this type in Germany, in a leading role, and coordinated them on an international level.
Dr Peter Kather has regularly served as arbitrator at the ICC and the DIS for IP-related cases. Furthermore, he is member of the German Association for Intellectual Property and Copyright, the European Patent Lawyers Association, Union IP, the German Lawyers’ Academy, the German Association of Law and Informatics, and the German-British Lawyers' Association. He publishes regularly on IP-related topics in various professional journals. His lectures on IP topics in seminars and conferences are highly valued.
