2019: Leading Firms

The second edition of WWL: Italy features lawyers from over 200 law firms, from boutiques to full-service offerings, illustrating the full breadth and depth of the market. However, almost one-third of the total listings come from seven standout firms that we profile here.

 

BonelliErede is a leading Italian law firm and tops our research in terms of listings, reflecting the firm’s far-reaching presence in the market. Achieving 48 listings across 16 practice areas, the firm cements its position as a domestic powerhouse. This guide went to press just after the firm's merger with Lombardi Segni e Associati in July 2019.

The firm is seen as go-to outfit for corporate matters. It sees six lawyers recognised for their expertise in M&A and governance matters in our research this year, while another three are highlighted on the taxation side. Their combined expertise sees them supporting clients across a wide range of transactional and restructuring matters.

The firm’s dispute resolution practice is similarly commendable, achieving seven listings across our arbitration and litigation chapters. Labour and employment law is another of its strong suits, with five lawyers identified as leading practitioners in the area. The firm is also active in real estate and construction mandates and is home to four recognised lawyers who excel in property licensing, development and transactions.

The firm has a strong team made up of key figures such as Sergio Erede, who is a leading light in M&A and governance issues. Claudio Tesauro is renowned for his exceptional work in competition law and Antonio Crivellaro, Laurence Shore and Andrea Carlevaris are considered top names for arbitration matters. Marcello Giustiniani is recognised for his top-tier labour and employment practice and Catia Tomasetti is highly respected for her profound ability in energy law. 

Standout practitioners who joined the firm in July 2019 include Giuseppe Lombardi who ranks as a pre-eminent figure for litigation, as well as banking, and restructuring and insolvency law. Lotario Dittrich is another key figure with an expansive skill set spanning arbitration, litigation, and restructuring and insolvency matters. Carla Mambretti is similarly impressive and excels in banking and litigation matters.

 

Top-tier Chiomenti performs impressively in this year’s rankings with 34 listings across 14 practice areas. The firm is a prominent player in the Italian market and is well equipped to advise clients on both domestic and international mandates.  

M&A and governance is an area in which Chiomenti excels, achieving an impressive nine listings in our corresponding chapter. The team has been an integral player in key private and public M&A transactions and is known for its profound ability when it comes to advising private equity funds, insurance companies and banks.

The firm’s real estate and construction practice also stands out in our research with four listings. Its practitioners possess expertise on a plethora of real estate transactions, including the development, financing, leasing and management of real estate assets.

Banking and finance is another area in which it performs well, with four lawyers highlighted. Its lawyers frequently advise financial institutions on a range of matters including acquisition finance, private equity, project finance and structured finance.

Notable figures at the firm include Enrico Giordano who stands out for his impressive corporate finance practice. Carlo Croff is well versed in M&A and joint venture matters, while Umberto Borzi is recognised for his first-rate real estate and construction practice.

 

Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli & Partners performs impressively in this year’s research into the Italian market. The firm ranks third overall in Italy in terms of the number of listings: 28 across 15 different practice areas, demonstrating the diversity and depth of legal expertise its practitioners have to offer.

Competition law is an area in which the firm particularly excels, with four of its lawyers achieving a listing for their outstanding work in the field. The firm is well placed to offer advice to clients on the full range of competition matters, including merger control proceedings and behavioural matters such as abuse of dominance issues and cartel investigations.

Another area of strength for the firm is found in the M&A and governance practice group, which also sees four lawyers listed for their skill in transactional work, national and cross-border projects and experience with matters of corporate governance and responsibility. 

It also distinguishes itself in energy law practice with three listings in our corresponding chapter. The team is commended for its profound ability in energy transactions, regulatory matters and related disputes.  

Key names at the firm include Francesco Gianni who is singled out by peers as one of the most distinguished practitioners in the M&A and governance market. Rita Gismondi is recognised as a leading light in the restructuring and insolvency arena, while Antonella Capria stands out as a top name for environmental law matters.

 

Full-service international firm Hogan Lovells continues to perform well in the Italian market, achieving 13 listings across seven practice areas in our research this year. Clients benefit not only from the expertise of the group’s domestic lawyers, but also from the extensive international network the firm has to offer.

A leading firm in the life sciences market, Hogan Lovells has four standout individuals highlighted in our corresponding chapter as experts in regulatory investigations, cross-border disputes and product liability matters.

The firm also has a strong sector focus, with its lawyers recognised in this edition as go-to practitioners for data, insurance and reinsurance, and real estate and construction law.

Outstanding individuals at the firm include Francesca Rolla, a top name for litigation and life sciences matters. Silvia Lolli is a highly sought-after insurance lawyer while Luigi Mansani is highly respected for his profound ability in life sciences and intellectual property matters.  

 

Legance Avvocati Associati demonstrates its position as a leading firm in the Italian legal market in our research this year, achieving 16 listings spanning nine different practice areas in this edition.  

The firm distinguishes itself for its expertise in the energy sector, with three listings for its lawyers in our corresponding chapter. The strength of its practitioners spans transactional matters across the energy sector, as well as regulatory matters and sector-related disputes.

Another area of law in which the firm excels is M&A and governance. This year we recognise three of its practitioners for their outstanding work in mergers and acquisitions on a domestic and international scale, cross-border ventures and counsel on corporate governance and responsibility.

Key figures at the firm include Cecilia Carrara, one of the leading arbitration specialists in the country. Gabriele Capecchi is a top name for real estate and construction law while Alberto Giampieri is commended for his strong expertise in corporate finance matters.

 

The highly distinguished Portolano Cavallo Studio Legale achieves a notable 13 listings across six practice areas in this year’s research. The firm’s performance highlights its position as a leader in the Italian market.  

Data law is an area in which the firm particularly excels with four lawyers recognised in our corresponding chapter. The team is well versed in handling a wide array of related matters including data protection, privacy and cybersecurity.  

The firm also performs well in the life sciences sector, with three individuals listed this year. Its impressive practice comprises expertise in medical devices, healthcare services and pharmaceuticals, as well as technological developments occurring in the field.

Corporate finance is another strength, with three practitioners listed for their leading work on private and public M&A and other complex cross-border transactions.

The firm is home to brilliant lawyers including Laura Liguori, who stands out for her top-tier data practice. Elisa Stefanini is a go-to name for life sciences matters, while Luca Gambini is commended for his impressive work advising on corporate and life sciences-related mandates.
