Indonesia: Legal Marketplace Analysis

From this emerging market we highlight 17 of the leading firms, recognising both independent local practices and those affiliated to foreign entities. Leading the way we have Hadiputranto Hadinoto & Partners and SSEK, an affiliated firm and independent firm, respectively. Hadiputranto Hadinoto & Partners

Hadiputranto Hadinoto & Partners, affiliated with Baker & McKenzie, was founded over two decades ago, and has since established a “significant presence” in the local marketplace. This coupled with the global reach of Baker & McKenzie makes for a powerful combination and a standout firm in Indonesia. The firm currently has 10 recommendations across nine practice areas. Luke Devine features in three of our international guides; mining, project finance and energy, and represents developers, lenders, governments and contractors involved in infrastructure development and financing. SSEK 

Since its establishment in 1992, SSEK has grown to become one of the leading law firms in Indonesia, with over 145 employees. This year the firm receives seven recommendations across six practice areas, making it our highest ranking independent local firm. Ali Budiardjo Nugroho Reksodiputro

Ali Budiardjo Nugroho Reksodiputro was founded in 1967 and has since become a “highly respected” player in the market, receiving six listings across our international editions. The firm has long taken a strong anti-corruption stance, priding itself on maintaining the highest possible ethical and professional standards. There are three names highlighted in our research; including co-founder Ahmad Fikri Assegaf who is recognised for his capital markets practice. Mochtar Karuwin Komar is one of Indonesia’s oldest law firms, having been established in 1971. The firm’s four decades of experience, spanning most of Indonesia’s modern commercial development, makes then “an invaluable asset to clients” looking for an insight into the local market. The firm has practitioners recommended for their work in the mining and transport sectors. Susandarini & Partners in association with Norton Rose Fulbright Australia enjoys links with a global firm with offices across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. This global reach allows those in the Jakarta office to tap into a network of expertise and offer clients a truly international service. Susandarini focuses her practice on the insurance industry, including advising clients on M&A, insurance products and disputes. She is a “pioneer” in the field with an “impressive ability to inspire confidence” according to clients. Rick Beckmann is recognised for his franchise practice, which has garnered him the reputation of a “bona fide expert” within the Indonesian market.

Rouse 

Intellectual property specialist Rouse has been active in Indonesia since 1997 and also sees two names featured, both for their trademark expertise. Juliane Sari Manurung is a “fantastic lawyer” whose “dedicated approach” and “encyclopaedic knowledge” of the IP sector makes her a “great asset to the firm”. Widyawan & Partners is a full-service law firm affiliated with Allens and Linklaters, providing it with a network of 40 offices in 29 countries. The firm sees two of its members selected for inclusion in our international editions. Widyawan is a “dean of the energy bar” in Indonesia, where he commands an “unmatched reputation” and impresses clients by offering “advice of the highest quality”. KPMG 

KPMG boasts a legacy in Indonesia which dates back to 1957, and is now part of a network of offices spanning 155 countries. This year practitioners in the Jakarta office garner two inclusions in our international corporate edition, both for their work as due diligence accountants. David East is head of the firm’s transactions and restructuring practice in Indonesia, and is lauded for his “sterling reputation” and “great flair”.
