David Meltzer is appointed new GC at the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross has hired David Meltzer as general counsel based in Washington, DC.

From 1 January 2013, Meltzer will lead a team of lawyers who will handle legal matters for the Red Cross including banking, finance, fundraising, contracts and intellectual property. He will also assume responsibility for the office of investigations, compliance and ethics at the Red Cross.

In addition to this, Meltzer will continue his role as the chief international officer in the international services department - a role he has held since 2005. In this role, he oversees all international activities of the organisation, including health programs focused on disease prevention, the American Red Cross Haiti Assistance Programme, and disaster preparedness and response activities throughout the world.

Speaking on his appointment Meltzer said: “I am honoured to be selected as the new general counsel of the Red Cross, and look forward to taking on these new and challenging responsibilities while continuing to lead our humanitarian work in countries around the world.”

Prior to joining the American Red Cross, Meltzer worked as the general counsel and executive vice president for regulatory affairs of satellite communications company Intelsat. He also has experience in private practice.
