Competition 2019: Future Leaders - Economists

WWL presents 55 economists regarded by peers and clients as future leaders in the competition space. They have been selected from over 30 firms and across 16 different countries for their experience and expertise in providing expert testimony and advisory services regarding antitrust and competition matters.

Methodology

Who's Who Legal does not list law firms, only individual experts. The leading firms are those in each region whose listed practitioners received the most total nominations in our research. We highlight individuals at other firms who also scored very highly in our research.

Oxera

This renowned international economics firm demonstrates the strength and depth of its experts in the competition space, with six listings in total.
Alexander Gaigl wins acclaim from market commentators who identify him as “a very knowledgeable expert, with good ideas regarding strategy ". He is experienced mergers, abuse of dominance and damages action matters.
Nicole Robins is a state aid specialist who gains recommendations from peers across the European market. One client effuses that she “is phenomenally dedicated, responsive and attuned to our needs".
Bertram Neurohr is described as "a very good economist” who is “very smart, flexible and insightful, and able to think strategically”. Interviewees add that he is “highly responsive, diligent and dedicated, all the while having a reassuringly calm demeanour".

Copenhagen Economics

A highly regarded economics firm on the European stage, with three of its practitioners achieving listings this year in the future leaders category.
The “excellent” Emmi Martikainen comes highly recommended by peers in the European market this year. Her expertise encompasses competition issues relating to mergers, abuse of dominance, damages and compliance.
Anssi Kohonen is a well-regarded name in the competition market whose practice focuses on quantitative analysis, econometrics and statistical modelling.
Adina Claici achieves recognition from peers in this year’s research for her work as a competition expert. She wields a decade of experience as an economist at the EU commission, and offers experience advising in relation to mergers, antitrust and state aid matters.

RBB Economics

This international heavyweight performs impressively this year, with four listings for its economists.
Tim Reuter is acclaimed as an extremely accurate, concise and thorough expert – which is highly valuable when it comes to complex economic models”. One client effuses that “he is able to see the bigger picture of a case”.
The “excellent” Joan de Solà-Morales is recommended by peers internationally as "one of the rising stars; really really outstanding". He is championed as “very bright and someone who does not over-complicate when there's no need to".
Enrique Cañizares Pacheco is lauded by peers for his " amazing profile in the country” as an expert. One client effuses that he “provides value in the ratification of expert reports before the regulatory authorities or courts and tribunals".
Chris Whelan is anup-and-coming name" in the market. He has over a decade of experience in the field and has advised on everything from mergers to misuse of market power and vertical agreement matters.

Here, we highlight four economists for their impressive work in the competition space.
Malcolm Tan draws recommendations from peers across Asia and Europe for his excellent practice, and is praised as "a diligent and hard-working expert" by sources. He advises clients across sectors including telecommunications, retail and financial services in mergers, investigations and dominance assessments.
Luís Fontaine Campos is a well-regarded name at the firm who achieves plaudits from market commentators around Europe as a “very user-friendly economist”. He has over 10 years of experience in merger cases and assisting in litigation proceedings before domestic and EU authorities and courts.

Iain Boa is "excellent for complex issues” and “thinks deeply about matters and sees things others don't" report effusive sources. He has wide-ranging experience providing quantitative analyses for merger and antitrust cases.

Rie Paving Mortensen at Plesner Advokatpartnerselskab is “highly skilled” and provides "strategic thinking and a fantastic overview of very complex matters with touch-points in many different jurisdictions”. Iona McCall of AlixPartners UK is endorsed for providing clients with "reliability, trustworthiness and gravitas" in their matters. She is also a "a good communicator and user-friendly", according to interviewees.

Germany

Simone Kohnz with E.CA Economics brings "a strong hands-on approach and an impressive ability to quickly zoom in on the important issues" as well as "pragmatism and drafting skills" to her work.

Switzerland

Swiss Economics’ Michael Funk is recognised by peers as an "experienced competition economist" who is able to draw on his "great background" at the Swiss investigation authority. His focus lies in antitrust and damages matters, as well as market analyses and competition issues.

This firm is a global player in the competition economics space, and demonstrates its strength in North America with three economists achieving a listing in the region this year.
Joanna Tsai wins recommendations as a "very skilled practitioner who is sensitive to the client’s needs". One peer admires that "she is very user-friendly; when we're hiring an economist, that is the number-one thing we're looking for".
The “analytically and intellectually brilliant” Simon Chisholm is lauded emphatically by peers as "absolutely outstanding at anticipating what the authority’s claims might be”. Source add that he “leaves no stone unturned, and is very sharp”.
The “excellent” Josh Lustig is singled out as an expert who "shows grace in handling daunting data sets”. One peer imparts that he “did an excellent job figuring out the questions we needed to answer from the client's perspective". Another reports that "he works tirelessly to nail down the data and assist with advocacy”.

Analysis Group

This firm sees three of its economists achieve listings as future leaders in the competition space in our research.
Rebecca Kirk Fair impresses with her ability to grasp not just the economics but the law, and to be a liaison between the lawyers and the economists". One peer rhapsodises that "her ability to manage the economic support in complex antitrust litigation is the best I've seen”. She is regularly sighted in merger clearance matters before the US agencies.
Sources identify Dov Rothman as “a rising star” in the market. He is described as “very effective both as an advocate in his written work and presenting his findings", and is highly regarded for his work in the healthcare space.
Mark Lewis is a “really brilliant guy” who does work that is “just top-notch”. He is well versed in antitrust matters in the private equity and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as transfer pricing disputes in the medical field.

NERA Economic Consulting

This international powerhouse earns three listings this year in the future leaders category for competition economists.
Timothy Watts is “a rare economist in the sense of combining big-picture analytical skills with attention to detail”, comments one source. Other interviewees describe how Watts “takes great care in his work, and is a very credible expert".
The “extremely savvy and adept” Subramaniam (Subbu) Ramanarayanan impresses with his “responsive, thoughtful, and easy-to-work-with” approach, as well as his “laser-like focus to make sure his clients are well positioned”. Clients “respect and appreciate Subbu’s ability to distil complex economic concepts and findings into simple ideas that can be expressed to clients, juries, and judges”.
The “excellent” Paul Wong is experienced in mergers and antitrust disputes, with deep expertise in the healthcare sector.

Nathan Miller at the Georgetown University Dept of Economics has "been getting a lot of traction " in the market, while sources note that “his reports are on-point”. He is experienced in consulting on high-value merger investigations and is an authority on cartels and price discrimination matters.

Gustavo Madi Rezende at LCA Consultores is highlighted by market commentators as "experienced in the field and with promising future". He has particular "technical expertise in antitrust clearance processes".

Peru

Vincent Poirier-Garneau of Apoyo Consultoria emerges as Peru’s foremost competition expert this year, leaving sources with “a great impression” as a result of his strong work in the area. He advises clients on a range of competition issues, including cartel proceedings, abuse of dominance matters and damages estimations.

Australia

HoustonKemp Economists’ Bronwyn McDonald is applauded for her "very cool head and considered approach". She is described as "diligent, very bright and a creative thinker" who can "step back and take a different angle".
