This year our research has identified 44 outstanding experts from 25 firms who are renowned for their capability advising clients on an array of complex matters in the insurance industry.

The Thought Leaders are those individuals who received the highest number of nominations from peers, corporate counsel and other market sources this year. Our research has identified them as being truly outstanding practitioners and the very best in their field. 

Leading Firms

Who's Who Legal does not list law firms, only individual lawyers. The leading firms are those in each region whose listed practitioners received the most total nominations in our research.

NAVIGANT CONSULTING emerges as one of the leading experts’ firms in our research this year. We identify four of its top names for insurance work.
Christopher Makuc is a “very impressive expert who does great work” and is “excellent in this space”, according to interviewees. He is particularly noted for his work in asbestos-related mass tort claims.
Sources “think highly of the work product” that Patrick McGrath provides clients. His expertise is focused around data analytics and damage modelling in relation to an array of product liability, environmental and mass tort insurance claims.
Bradley Drew is a “fantastic expert” whose specialism is in claims data management and insurance allocation and billing.
Kevin O’Toole is also recommended for his deep experience and expertise in financial analytics work in the area.

Global consulting expert firm FTI CONSULTING is home to five listed experts across three offices in the UK and the US.
Ian Marshall is “one of the highest regarded” experts in the area, a view echoed in our award of Thought Leader status this year. He “performs extremely well, knows his stuff and gets the confidence of the tribunal fully”, according to our sources.
The “always very knowledgeable” Paul Braithwaite is a highly experienced actuary who has a superb reputation for his work in insurance and reinsurance matters.
Jim Wrynn is “absolutely excellent” for insurance-related work, according to interviewees. He is noted for his understanding of innovative insurance products on both a domestic and international level.

NATHAN ASSOCIATES has two experts listed, both of whom are Thought Leaders in this year’s research.
Stephen Sellick “can really do it all”, say sources, who describe him as being “at the top of the game”. He is particularly known as a “real expert” in insurance allocation, generally advising policyholders.
Jessica Horewitz is a standout name who “really excels at damages estimation”. Sources also comment that she “does a wonderful job of forecasting future lawsuits” in relation to insurance coverage.

Other Leading Individuals

We highlight individuals at other firms who also scored very highly in our research.


The “excellent” Romy Comiter at MAZARS in London has “great subject knowledge” in the insurance space, say interviewees. Her broad expertise covers compliance and financial analysis matters, among other areas, and she is well versed in technology-related solutions.

QUEST GROUP’s Jeremy Fall is a highly experienced insurance expert with comprehensive expertise in all types of dispute resolution. In addition to acting as expert witness, he has also appeared as arbitrator in numerous disputes.


Charles Mullin at BATES WHITE ECONOMIC CONSULTING is an “exceptional testifying expert” according to commentators, who also praise his wide-ranging abilities in estimation and allocation. Sources also call him “a standout” and a practitioner “at the absolute top of the market”.

Jonathan Rosen of ARBITRATION MEDIATION AND EXPERT WITNESS SERVICES is a pre-eminent insurance and reinsurance expert who interviewees praise for his “great knowledge base”, “ability to think through challenging matters” and his “likeable and engaging” style. Says one impressed source, “He is really adept at getting his point across. Juries and other arbitrators want to vote Jonathan’s way.”

WILLIS TOWERS WATSON’s James Dorion is “really at the top of the list”, says one peer. He has “a high profile and a superb reputation” for his work in the asbestos industry in particular and is known for working with policyholders in relation to their coverage programmes.

Paul Thomson III at REASSESS is one of the top New York-based experts in our research and is cited as being “extremely good at what he does”. He appears regularly as testifying expert in an array of litigation and arbitration relating to insurance.

Robin Cantor of BERKELEY RESEARCH GROUP is a “very commercial” expert who is “very proficient about complex insurance matters and the related impact on economic analysis”, according to impressed sources.

Chicago-based Ross Mishkin of THE CLARO GROUP is a “very active figure in the expert arena” and a practitioner with “a strong stature in the market”. His particular specialism is consulting in relation to disputes and class actions concerning the insurance industry.

The “very impressive” Joe Loggia at BUXBAUM LOGGIA & ASSOCIATES “really knows his subject” say market sources. He has spent more than 45 years in the insurance industry and is one of the most experienced names around.

Denise Neumann Martin of NERA ECONOMIC CONSULTING is a noted economist who has advised on a vast array of consumer class actions, toxic torts and product defect cases. One impressed peer says: “Denise tops my list.”

Brad Murlick at BDO continues to be regarded as a leading name in the insurance consultancy field, thanks to his outstanding experience across a wide variety of disputes. He has notable expertise in relation to catastrophic claims, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

Andrew Maneval of CHESHAM CONSULTING is a “very good choice” for clients seeking insurance consultancy advice, according to sources who note him as being “very smart and very knowledgeable”.
