Now in its third year, our list of insurance and reinsurance experts details the practitioners who are invaluable to lawyers, providing evidence in court and delivering the highest-quality expertise on insurance coverage and claims, loss allocation, and quantum of damages.

This year we highlight 50 individuals across the US, England and Australia who stand out as leaders in the field.

FTI CONSULTING remains one of the world’s leading full-service business service outfits and has advised clients on multibillion-dollar insurance claims. The firm represents both insurers and policyholders, and leads our research this year with eight listings.
In the London office, Ian Marshall is one of our thought leaders and managing director of the firm’s London insurance services practice. He specialises in disputes, run-off and insurance technical investigations. One respondent says, "He has a fantastic eye for detail, and the capacity to explain complicated factual and accounting principles in simple language. He is very clear and succinct in his advice.”
The firm’s US operation sees experts recommended from all three of its three offices.
Paul Braithwaite has over 30 years’ actuarial experience and provides expert testimony, loss reserve reviews and dispute resolution support. He is “definitely a leader”, according to sources, and “handles a lot of insurance work”.
Stephen Moseley in Chicago is “highly respected in the area”, comment interviewees. He has expertise in complex business insurance claims and frequently provides forensic accounting services to clients.
In San Francisco, Gregory Thaler is global leader of the business insurance claims practice and focuses on quantum of damages, often in a litigation setting. He is highly recommended for his work and expertise.
Wendy Shapss co-leads the insurance services practice and specialises in litigation consulting, forensic accounting and fraud. She is noted for her “keen perception and strong work ethic”.

NAVIGANT provides forensic accounting and consulting services in relation to commercial insurance claims. It has established itself as one of the leading expert services firms outside the Big Four, and sees five practitioners listed.
Patrick McGrath advises on landmark insurance claims and is highly regarded for his experience with data analytics and technological solutions.
Christopher Makuc advises insurers and reinsurers in relation to mass torts, an area in which he is “very dynamic” and “a problem-solver”.

BERKELEY RESEARCH GROUP has established itself as a leading boutique with an international footprint. Five individuals from the firm are listed this year.
Robin Cantor in Washington, DC is recognised as one of our thought leaders. She has over three decades of experience in insurance claims analysis. One respondent remarks, "Robin is a very knowledgeable economist and is highly creative in approaching how to estimate damages and how to assess liability in a case.”
Jeff Mitchell in Emeryville advises companies from a multitude of industries on issues relating to complex insurance and reinsurance. He is “invaluable, and can do the whole gamut of issues when it comes to insurance matters”, according to commentators.
The “highly sought after and extremely knowledgeable” Ben Nolan in Pensacola has extensive experience as an expert witness and has testified in numerous cases on behalf of insurers.

Founded in 2005, THE CLARO GROUP has made impressive progress in just over a decade and is now regarded as one of the best private consulting and analytics firms in the United States.
Michelle Uddin has expertise in complex insurance claims related to asbestos, pollution and human health issues. She is identified as “one of the absolute stars of the insurance field”.
Gerald Richardson provides advice and representation to clients in complex insurance claims, often involving litigation, and is noted as a “highly able” individual who “can deliver on big cases”.

MILLIMAN achieves two listings in the UK.
Derek Newton is recommended for his actuarial expertise, expert witness services and underwriting. He has longstanding knowledge of insurance issues and is regarded as “a real insurance specialist”.
Gary Wells specialises in property and casualty insurance where he is “one of the best in the business; he has a great reputation in the market and can really deliver”.

RGL FORENSICS sees two of its experts recommended.
The “dynamic and highly skilled” Tony Levitt is listed for his experience in high-value international cases, in areas including damages, product liability and investigations.
Catherine Rawlin has over 25 years of forensic accounting experience and represents insurers, reinsurers and retrocessionaires.

At MAZARS, Romy Comiter is recognised as one of our thought leaders. Her expertise includes IT, regulatory issues and financial analysis. One of her peers comments, “She definitely deserves a place on your list; she is very technically accomplished.”

At QUEST GROUP, Jeremy Fall has vast experience in complex insurance claims and has also appeared as an expert witness in multiple cases. One respondent says, “He has strong insights into complex insurance issues; he is very capable and I think very highly of him.”

GNARUS ADVISORS sees two of its experts recommended in our research as thought leaders.
Jessica Horewitz specialises in economic and econometric analyses relating to insurance. She “does a lot of insurance work and is very well known in the market”.
Stephen Sellick focuses on quantitative analysis in relation to litigation matters. Sources say: “He is a phenomenal person in this field. He knows the insurance and reinsurance side and is really well rounded.”

At leading insurance firm MARSH, two experts are recommended.
“Top-tier” former lawyer Ruth Kochenderfer is recognised for her expertise in a multitude of issues relating to insurance claims and is “a noted name in the industry”.
James Dorion is an expert in insurance matters relating to mass tort and has vast experience in loss allocation issues. He is highly regarded in the market for his longstanding practice and skilful negotiation of insurance matters.

RWH MYERS & COMPANY sees two experts listed.
Co-founder William Myers has deep experience auditing insurance claims alongside expertise in forensic accounting and investigations. He is regarded as “a seasoned insurance expert with impressive market knowledge”.
Co-founder Sharon Pisko Wolfe focuses on extra-expense loss calculations for corporate policyholders, where she is highly regarded for her expertise.

Jonathan Rosen, founder of ARBITRATION MEDIATION AND EXPERT WITNESS SERVICES in New York is recognised as one of our thought leaders. One respondent says, “He is very knowledgeable; an expert, lawyer and arbitrator who can see it from all sides.”

At BATES WHITE ECONOMIC CONSULTING, Charles Mullin specialises in insurance allocation including liability and damage issues. He is noted as “front-and-centre in the market – a major person in insurance and reinsurance”.

REASSESS sees Paul Thomson III recommended. He provides expert testimony in insurance and reinsurance arbitrations and is “very knowledgeable on all insurance-related issues”.
