Trademark Attorneys Analysis

For the second time we take a look at the legal professionals qualified to advise on the protection and enforcement of trademark rights. In this section, we highlight the firms that stand out, as well as the most highly regarded attorneys in the market.

The individuals focus on filing and prosecuting applications to register trademarks, as well as advising on the use and registration of trademarks; handling trademark oppositions, revocations, invalidations and assignments; carrying out searches; and advising on trademarks infringement matters. In total, we select over 200 leading trademark attorneys.

Ireland’s FRKelly excels in our research with interviewees widely extolling the excellence of its European trademark attorneys, six of whom are recognised in this guide. Niamh Hall ranks highly, with clients remarking that she is “truly excellent”, and “so easy to work with and very commercial.” Mary Bleahene has over 20 years’ experience in trademark prosecution matters. “She’s very attentive to her clients and really knows her stuff”, according to respondents. Brenda O'Regan is also regarded as “one of the very best trademark attorneys in Ireland”, with an excellent portfolio of Irish and foreign brands.

Kilburn & Strode leads the way in the UK with an impressive bench of attorneys. “Top of the pile” is Carrollanne Lindley, who heads the trademark group. She is active in all aspects of prosecution and enforcement for domestic and international clients. According to one source, “She is very popular as her work is well-prepared and commercially orientated to each client.” Iain Stewart is “one of the top guys for both filing and opposition matters – he’s very on the ball and really knows his stuff,” says one respondent.

Marks & Clerk has a strong network of practitioners, earning recognition in five jurisdictions. In Hong Kong, Sandra Gibbons has over 20 years’ experience in all aspects of trademark portfolio management. Interviewees describe her as “highly astute” and “judicious”. In London, Alison Melling has an extensive portfolio of international clients who regard her as having “a deep skill set” and a “user-friendly” approach. Glasgow’s Aidan Clarke is considered the “go-to for prosecution matters in Scotland”, particularly for his “international outlook”. In Ottawa, Coleen Morrison is praised for being “excellent to work with” and for the “clear and practical method underlying her work”.

At Grünecker Patent - und Rechtsanwälte, Martin Aufenanger leads our research in the German market. According to one client, “He is an authority and certainly one of the most valued trademark attorneys in Europe”.

Cabinet Beau de Loménie stands out for its excellent outfit in France. Head of the department Aurélia Marie is “simply outstanding” says interviewees, “she is always my first port of call for French and EU trademark prosecution matters”. Santarelli is also one of the best offerings in France, with Eric Le Bihan particularly highly regarded by market commentators.

At Gowling WLG, practice group leader Margaret Fitzpatrick has 20 years’ experience in portfolio management and is considered “a go-to for prosecution matters” in the country. Alongside her, Karin Binder handles all aspects of trademark prosecution. An interviewee remarked that “she’s technically excellent and provides effective advice”.

Managing partner of Chofn IP in China Tingxi Huo is extensively experienced in handling protection strategies. Respondents find

Ulf Willquist of Awapatent is "a fantastic and highly experienced trademark attorney, I can't recommend him enough" notes one respondent.

Aird & Berlis’s co-leader of the IP group Ken Clark is “an excellent trademark attorney, who shows a great amount of technical knowledge and commercial consideration”.
