Austria: TMT Analysis 2015

The technology, media and telecommunications sector in Austria remains active. In 2014, Telekom Austria raised €997 million in a share sale – almost 60 per cent was snapped up by America Movil and a further 28 per cent by the Austrian state holding company, the second main owner of Telekom Austria. We single out 28 specialists in this field. 

At Schoenherr, five names are singled out. Thomas Wenger is a corporate partner specialising in transactions in the TMT sector. He is “efficient” and possesses “finely tuned skills”. Wolfgang Tichy is noted for his work with new technologies. He specialises in contract law and is a “valued adviser”. Günther Leissler has a varied practice encompassing regulatory matters, data protection, IT and telecommunications and new technologies, while Guido Kucsko specialises in IT matters. The “fantastic” Christian Schmelz is a telecommunications “specialist” and a “great operator”.

At Dorda Brugger Jordis, three lawyers are selected for inclusion. Stephan Polster is a communications “expert”. He advises clients in the industry on M&A transactions and competition matters. Axel Anderl is a “details-oriented lawyer” who specialises in IT law and e-commerce, outsourcing, media law and data protection. He is also recommended for his knowledge of social media. Martin Brodey is a “transactional guru” who “expertly handles deals” in the TMT sector.

Wolf Theiss garners two listings. Head of the firm-wide IP and IT practice group Georg Kresbach is “extremely knowledgeable” on outsourcing and IT law. He is a “go-to lawyer” on internet issues. Christian Hoenig is “extremely adept at handling complex and time-sensitive transactions”. He has worked on many deals in the telecommunications and IT industries and is also admitted to the bar in New York.

Andreewitch & Simon’s Markus Andréewitch is a “great problem-solver” who likes to “get to the heart of a deal”. He has a “direct approach” that clients appreciate.

At Legis, Dietmar Huemer represents a significant number of clients in the IT, e-business, telecommunications and data protection areas. He is noted for his “commercial acumen” and “solutions-oriented approach”. 

Schmidt Kornfeld Wukoschitz’s Rainer Kornfeld concentrates his practice on computer and internet law, data protection and privacy, media and related corporate and competition issues. 

At his own firm Dr Norbert Wiesinger provides clients with a “dedicated and tailored service”. He has particular expertise in communications and IT law and is “without doubt a star in the field”.

Rainer Knyrim at Preslmayr is an “authority on data protection”. He is also knowledgeable on IT, telecommunications and e-commerce law and garners praise for his “strong technical skills”.

Brauneis Klauser Prändl is represented by Felix Prändl, an IT “guru” who is strongly recommended by peers and clients alike.

Brandl & Talos is represented by Arthur Stadler, who specialises in e-commerce, internet and gambling law. He frequently represents clients before EU courts and EU authorities, and is a “great tactician”.

Clemens Thiele has a “strong degree of specialisation in e-commerce and IT law”. According to peers he “really knows his stuff” and is a “pleasure to deal with”.

Korn & Partners’ Gottfried Korn advises clients in the TMT sector and is “very effective”. His “sterling reputation” is due to his “meticulous work” and “user-friendly manner”.

Christoph Petsch at Petsch Frosch Klein Arturo provides “sound advice” and has an “excellent style of delivery”.

DLA Piper is represented by Sabine Fehringer who has a broad TMT practice encompassing new media and advertising, IT, research and development, and related transactions. She regularly advises or defends clients with regard to media and advertising campaigns and is “highly sought after” by clients in the field.

Freimüller Obereder Pilz & Partner is home to Michael Pilz, a lawyer concentrating on media, IT and telecommunications law. He has “invaluable sector experience” and assists clients in related transactions and competition issues.

Bertram Burtscher is based in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s Vienna office where he heads the TMT team. He is known for his “ability to get the crux of a problem” and his “quick grasp of complex issues”.

Noll Keider is represented by Alfred Noll, a “talented lawyer” specialising in media and copyright law. Clients value his “forensic approach” and “careful handling of matters”.

Thomas Höhne at Höhne In der Maur & Partner concentrates his practice on IT, media and information law. He is “extremely adept” at competition law issues.

CIZEK | IP is home to Alexander Cizek, a lawyer who has extensive experience in internet and IT law. His expertise consists of data protection, advertising, outsourcing projects and handling disputes in court.

Geistwert’s Max Mosing has a “stellar reputation” in the technology sector. He combines “technical expertise” and “great flair” in his dealings with clients.

Meinhard Ciresa at his own firm concentrates on internet and IT, technology, and advertising and marketing issues. He has an “unrivalled reputation” in the sector and is praised for his “hands-on approach”.
