Matthias is a director in AFRY Management Consulting and heads the dispute resolution practice. He is a highly accomplished energy market expert and works across Europe and beyond, combining international market and dispute expertise with local insights from AFRY’s global office presence. With more than 25 years of experience from industry line positions and from consultancy, Matthias brings significant expertise from across the gas, power and heat industry.
Matthias is frequently involved in investment and contract disputes, and regularly gives independent expert testimony in front of arbitral tribunals. Over the past eight years Matthias has been involved in around 30 disputes with an aggregated disputed value of more than €5 billion annually. His experience comprises many parts of the energy value chain including supply, transportation, storage and power and heat generation and a multitude of disputed issues, including change in circumstances, value of flexibility, abuse of dominant positions, impact of regulatory intervention, procurement issues etc.
Matthias’ strengths are building fact-based arguments underpinned by sound quantitative and qualitative evidence. He has substantive experience in presenting complex cases in front of arbitral tribunals.
His clients appreciate his comprehensive understanding of the complex interaction between all parts of the gas, power and heat value chain in a global context, as well as his ability to present such concepts to a tribunal panel in a clear, calm and persuasive manner.
Matthias works with producers, importers, infrastructure operators, traders, power generators and utilities on market and strategy-related topics, and advises investors on mergers and acquisitions.
He has worked in numerous geographies in Europe, and selectively in Asia and South America.
