Matthew Townsend is counsel at Fangda Partners in Hong Kong, where he specialises in international commercial and investment arbitration.
Matthew acts as counsel and advocate at all stages of arbitration proceedings. He has experience under the rules of the major arbitration institutions (including ICC, LCIA, HKIAC, SIAC, SCC, and CIETAC). His practice is focused on energy (including renewables and oil and gas), technology, infrastructure, mining and resources, and M&A. He has particular experience acting for and against states and state-owned entities.
A Mandarin Chinese speaker, Matthew has also acted or advised in relation to a number of China-specific arbitration issues, including China-seated arbitration and mediation-arbitration. Prior to joining Fangda Partners in 2016, Matthew worked as an arbitration lawyer at the Beijing and Hong Kong offices of an international law firm.
He is a regular writer and speaker on topics of international arbitration and issues of business and law in China.
