Biography

Massimo Coccia holds a J.D. degree cum laude from the University of Rome-1 Law School (1981) and a Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) from the University of Michigan Law School (1984), which he attended as a Fulbright Fellow.

Massimo is founding partner of Coccia De Angelis Vecchio & Associati, an internationally oriented Italian law firm with offices in Rome and Milan. Massimo is known worldwide for his impressive expertise in international and national sports law (he and his law firm being frequently retained as counsel by prominent professional clubs, leagues, athletes, agents and sports governing bodies from all over the world) and in commercial arbitration as arbitrator or counsel. He is also involved in regulatory matters (antitrust and energy) and entertainment law issues (cinema).

Since 1996, Massimo has been an arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where he is one of the most experienced and esteemed arbitrators, having sat in more than 300 cases and drafted many awards in landmark cases. He has been a CAS arbitrator at the Olympic Games of Salt Lake City 2002, Turin 2006 and London 2012.

Massimo is a tenured law professor in Italy, teaching International Law at the Tuscia University of Viterbo and European Competition Law at the University of Rome-1 Law School. Massimo is also a tenured law professor, teaching International Law at the Tuscia University of Viterbo and European Competition Law at the University of Rome 1, and often publishing articles and speaking at symposia on issues of international arbitration.

As a practitioner, Massimo is mostly involved in international and national commercial arbitration, in international and national sports law, and in regulatory matters such as antitrust and energy.

With regard to international arbitration, Massimo has been frequently involved in commercial arbitration (both as an arbitrator and as a counsel) and in sports arbitration (mostly as an arbitrator). Within international commercial arbitration, Massimo has mostly dealt with construction matters and contractual disputes, also dealing sometimes with issues of corruption.
