Martin Cockburn is a founding partner at MCA Sports Law LLP (MCA), a first-class boutique law firm, which is specialized in the fields of national and international sports law.
Having gained, for more than a decade, a significant understanding of the global sports industry – particularly in Europe, the Middle East and Asia –, Martin advises prestigious stakeholders in the sports industry, i.e. federations, leagues, clubs, players/athletes, coaches or intermediaries/agents.
Moreover, Martin specializes in party representation in front of decision-making bodies of national and international sports federations (FIFA, AFC, UEFA, etc.), the Court of Arbitration for Sport as well as the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
Equally prominent fields of Martin’s expertise are the involvement in the negotiation/drafting of transfer and employment contracts, the drafting of sport regulations, governance-related matters, the eligibility of players for representative teams, and, from a legal point of view, the realization of complex sport projects (e.g. establishment of a federation’s national arbitration tribunal, implementation of international scouting/training projects, etc.).
Prior to founding MCA, Martin has been working since 2009 with the Qatar Football Association in the position as Senior Legal Advisor, where he also has gained vast experience with regards to the organization of major sport events (e.g. AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011TM).
In 2005 Martin obtained a law degree from the prestigious Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität in Munich (Germany). Martin also holds a master degree (LL.M.) in International Sports Law from the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economia in Madrid/Spain, awarded with honours in 2008.
In addition, Martin regularly publishes academic articles on international sports law and lectures in various sports-law related conferences.
