Dr Martin Buntscheck is the founder and partner at Buntscheck, a German law firm focusing exclusively on competition/antitrust law.
Martin has extensive experience in advising clients on all aspects of German and EU antitrust law issues, with a particular focus on the representation of clients in complex private litigation cases, in cartel proceedings and in merger control cases before the European Commission, the German Federal Cartel Office and European and German courts. In addition, he advises his clients on compliance issues as well as on antitrust issues related to commercial agreements such as distribution agreements, licence agreements, R&D agreements and joint ventures.
In recent years, Martin’s client base has included leading multinationals, investment banks and private equity firms as well as numerous small and medium-sized enterprises. Examples of Martin’s recent experience include: advising and representing clients in high-profile cartel investigations of the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office concerning trucks, prestressed steel, train tracks, industrial fire insurance, LPG (liquid propane gas), automatic doors, beer, sausages, flour, etc; representing major industrial clients in complex private antitrust litigation cases/follow-on damages actions related to the European trucks cartel case, the European bearings cartel case, the European gas-insulated switchgear cartel case, the European car glass cartel case, the European calcium carbide cartel case, etc; advising and assisting US and UK-based law firms in international judicial assistance matters; and advising and representing clients in complex international and domestic merger control cases (eg, in the automotive, retail, logistics, engineering and food sectors).
Martin is a member of the Munich Bar, the Association of German Antitrust Lawyers, the Association of Antitrust Lawyers in Munich, the Association of Antitrust Lawyers in Frankfurt, and the American Bar Association (section of antitrust law). He is a frequent speaker and panellist on international and domestic conferences and has published numerous articles and books on European and German antitrust law and related regulatory issues.
Born in Dortmund in 1970, Martin graduated at the Universities of Regensburg (Germany) and Alcalá de Henares (Spain). He earned a postgraduate degree (LLM) in commercial law from the University of Aberdeen (Scotland, UK), and a doctorate degree (PhD) from the University of Mainz (Germany). Martin speaks German and English.
Prior to founding the law firm Buntscheck in 2008, Martin was heading the German antitrust practice group of the US firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, Frankfurt (2006–2008) and worked at pre-eminent German-based commercial law firm Gleiss Lutz, Stuttgart/Frankfurt (2000–2006).
