Leopoldo Burguete-Stanek is the partner at González Calvillo in charge of the firm’s environmental and natural resources practice group. With over 30 years of experience in the field, Mr Burguete has acquired expertise in all aspects of environmental and natural resource law with particular strengths in regulatory, due diligence and project development while advising clients in sophisticated cross-border transactions. He has been consistently ranked as a foremost practitioner in his fields of practice by recognised international publications such as Chambers and Partners, WWL and Latin Lawyer.
Mr Burguete is able to advise and guide his clients through many aspects of cross-border transactions and project planning, including the management of social issues affecting a project, through the implementation of international standards for project finance, and environmental regulations.
His expertise in all aspects of environmental and natural resource laws includes particular strengths in energy; water management; hazardous waste control (including all aspects of authorised transportation); atmospheric pollution; environmental impact; due diligence and auditing; climate change; natural protected areas; land contamination and soil restoration; mining; forestry; oil and gas activities; and all aspects of environmental litigation and dispute resolution.
Mr Burguete also focuses on corporate governance, offering advice that enables clients to create a corporate culture for environment, transparency and institutionalisation of internal processes, which contributes to their solid growth. This set of services includes: institutionalisation of the companies’ policies and procedures; the design and implementation of different corporate governance models; legal and operational compliance; conflict solution; risk administration and mitigation; claims management; and emergency preparedness and response.
Mr Burguete-Stanek is a member of the eighth cohort of the Leadership for Environment and Sustainable Development programme (LEAD) of the Rockefeller Foundation. He studied at La Salle University, Mexico (1983) and he holds a master’s degree in international law from Southern Methodist University (1986), where his interest in the importance of corporate governance and compliance began. Mr Burguete-Stanek has also obtained several postgraduate diplomas in economic, corporate and environmental law from such academic institutions as the Universidad Panamericana, the Instituto Tecnológico Autonomo de México (ITAM) and others. He is currently coordinator of the environmental commission of the Mexican Bar Association and the environmental law committee of the National Association of Corporate Attorneys. He has teaching experience at several Institutions, such as the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City and Guadalajara, ITAM and Escuela Libre de Derecho.
