Juan Carlos Castillo is the managing partner of Aguilar Castillo Love’s Guatemala office and co-managing partner of the firm. Juan Carlos has participated in some of the most significant and first-of-its-kind transactions in Guatemala across M&A and finance, including the acquisition of a majority stake in Empresa Electrica de Guatemala for more than $500m; the acquisition of all downstream assets owned by Shell in Central America; and the first-ever dollar-denominated loan guaranteed with bonds issued in local currency. After serving for more than eight years as president of the board of directors of the largest Guatemalan exchange, he is particularly equipped to deal with capital markets issues, including bond issuances, IPOs, swaps or other derivative transactions.

In addition, Juan Carlos is recognised as one of the leading energy specialists in Guatemala.

Juan Carlos received his law degree (magna cum laude) from the Universidad Francisco Marroquin and earned his LLM from Harvard University, Law School. He has written numerous articles and contributed to many international publications. Titles authored include, “Judicial Independence in Guatemala, A Critical Analysis,” Harvard Law School. Former roles include professor in public international law at the Universidad Francisco Marroquin, legal advisor to the Guatemalan government in the privatization of electric generation and distribution companies, and in the privatisation of Guatemala’s ports and airports.

Juan Carlos is a member of the Guatemalan Bar Association and the International Bar Association. He speaks English, Spanish and Italian.
