João Vilhena Valério has focused his practice in the field of international arbitration, acting as counsel and as arbitral secretary. He acts as secretary to tribunals before, inter alia, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the DIFC-LCIA and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
Prior to co-founding BeecheyArbitration, João was legal counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, where he provided legal and administrative support to arbitral tribunals and parties in proceedings administered by the PCA concerning English, Spanish and Portuguese language BIT, and contract-based investment arbitrations. He also provided legal assistance in appointing authority matters, promoted the PCA in Lusophone jurisdictions, and represented the PCA at conferences and meetings. Between 2007 and 2013, he worked at Uría Menéndez (subsequently, Uría Menéndez-Proença de Carvalho), principally focusing on dispute resolution matters, involving both public and private parties, in which the firm was engaged as counsel. Since 2016, João has acted as registrar of the British Virgin Islands International Centre (BVI IAC).
He is a member of the Portuguese Bar, as well as of the International Bar Association (IBA), the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), the Spanish Arbitration Club (CEA) and the Portuguese Arbitration Association (APA). He has published several articles and spoken at conferences on international arbitration, as well as having participated as an arbitrator in different moot competitions.
