James Minamoto is a well-known M&A lawyer with extensive experience advising major multinationals on cross-border M&A and joint venture transactions.
James Minamoto is a US-qualified lawyer and senior foreign counsel at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, based in Tokyo, Japan. He assists multinational companies on a broad range of cross-border legal matters, including establishing a business presence, M&A, joint ventures, supply/distribution, antitrust/competition, and employment. He also counsels on issues that frequently arise for companies involved in cross-border disputes. Prior to joining Anderson Mori & Tomotsune in 1993, Jim practised as a corporate litigation attorney in New York City, where he trained under several former federal prosecutors. A native English speaker with a Japan legal track record spanning 25 years, Jim has particular expertise in smoothly and efficiently managing and coordinating legal assignments and projects involving Japanese or US law, and ensuring that the firm’s legal services meet international standards.
Jim is a graduate of Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. He is admitted to the New York Bar and several US federal courts, and has been registered with the Japanese bar association as a special foreign member since 1994. He has served as an adjunct lecturer at Tokyo University’s Graduate School for Law and Politics, and a member of the firm's subcommittee responsible for recruiting non-Japanese legal professionals. Complementing his corporate law practice, Jim is active in community matters, serving as a pro bono legal adviser to the Isamu Noguchi Foundation of Japan, and is an active member of the US-Japan Council, a public interest organisation.
