Ignacio Andrade is managing partner of Sfera in Guatemala. With over 30 years of professional experience, he has participated in important transactions, working with well-known companies such as BellSouth, Generadora Eléctrica del Norte, Banco G&T Continental, SBA Communications and Tigo. Mr Andrade specialises in regulatory, transactional, corporate and commercial, financial, tax, labour, and alternative dispute resolution issues for local and foreign companies, particularly in the telecommunications, banking and energy sectors.
In the telecommunication sector he has successfully negotiated more than 15 interconnection agreements and foreign carrier services agreements, some of which are worth more than US$300 million. He has more than 15 years’ experience of handling issues related to the telecommunications regulator, and of the settlement and litigation of disputes with other operators. He successfully challenged a tax law for telecommunications services in Guatemala. His work also covers community relations disputes in the installation of telecommunications equipment.
His experience in the banking sector includes consulting in the constitution of trusts and various financial and banking products, as well as opinions and consultations in relation to the hiring of international bank loans with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Banco de los Trabajadores.
He is an arbitrator-designate for the dispute resolution committee of the Chamber of Industry of Guatemala (CRECIG) and has served as counsel or co-counsel in arbitrations with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the American Arbitration Association (AAA).
His experience in litigation and arbitration relates to disputes in distribution agreements, telecommunications and a variety of energy sectors, as well as extensive experience in intellectual property litigation, successfully handling trademark and copyright objections.
