Ian is head of the well-regarded business crime team at Howard Kennedy. He has over 25 years' experience advising corporates and individuals on high-profile, complex and serious fraud domestic and international investigations, financial crime and regulatory work. He has specialist experience in solicitors’ disciplinary work and SRA investigations.
Ian has represented clients in investigations by the SFO, the FCA, the CMA, the HMRC, the CPS and the NCA. He understands the nuances of investigations by differing regulating bodies and applies his depth of experience and expertise to achieve the best outcome. His experience includes dealing with allegations of bribery and corruption, money laundering, serious fraud, sexual harassment, criminal cartel activity, and market abuse/insider trading. He conducts internal investigations for clients and represents individuals during investigations. Ian also acts for high-net-worth individuals in general crime matters.
Ian's work reinforces his position as a top-quality business crime defence lawyer. In 2018 and 2019 Ian successfully defended Achim Kraemer and Andreas Hauschild at trial, former senior Deutsche Bank traders charged with by the SFO with manipulating Euribor between 2005 and 2006. He has been involved in the SFO investigations into Patisserie Valerie, Rolls Royce, GPT, ENRC, GSK and Tesco. He is currently advising a state bank in a fraud investigation; an international world-renowned retailer in a private prosecution; and a member of a well-known business dynasty in relation to criminal allegations arising from a family dispute. He recently advised an Oscar-winning director in respect of an investigation by the PSNI, under the Official Secrets Act, into a documentary about a notorious UVF massacre during the Troubles.
